If a store is trying to reward customers who were fuel efficient, then it would make sense to deny parking to someone who lives 2 blocks away, even if they drove up in a Prius. The whole thing reminds me of the phrase "conspicuous consumption" from years ago. There is this element of " look at me, I'm so green" to it all. You wanna really be green, take the bus! Before I moved away, I gave some thought to buying a Prius. Not because of the fuel economy, but because I would have been allowed to drive in the LIE HOV lane even as a single occupant vehicle, and that could have saved me 10 or so minutes each way. |

There's a Publix near where I work which has a similar spot (I think it may be for women that already have babies, as well as expectant. I'll take a pic the next time I'm there). I rarely see anyone parked there, though. Doesn't really bother me, as I usually go to that store when they open at 7 AM, on the way to work, so I just park in the first regular space next to the baby space. :) |

The pregnant or baby space would never bother me either, as its a special need or "hardship" with all the strollers, etc. That's a WHOLE lot different than "spaces for fuel efficient vehicles only". There's no handicap or disapility, or special need that they would have. |

Many people do not know this but up until the late 1970s it was mandatory for a pregnant woman in an operating title of the NYCT, to be put on unpaid leave in her 7th month of pregnancy. (in the old Brown rule book) Woman's groups fought such laws and today a pregnant woman can operate her train or drive her bus until her water breaks or she goes into labor. Parking spaces for pregnant women more or less contradict that fight that promoted the idea that pregnancy is not an illness but a natural state. That said, I have no issues with them - its just contradictory to the woman's movement. |
