I would've hoped this is what they are doing, except I saw so many headlines yesterday talking about "generation rent". The only downside is a lot of condos were former apartments. Same paperthin walls, similar crap, but if i owned this place, i probably wouldn't mind it. Although were I live now, i literally have a new crack in the wall everyday. whatta town! |

Good news for cities like NY but I still think that once children are school age a lot of these people will head out to the suburbsYou are 100% correct. Especially in places like Williamsburg, LIC and Bushwick. These people move in as young single twenty-somethings. When they get married and have kids and try sending them to public school, and realize their kids will go to school with kids from Queensbridge projects or Marcy projects, they will panic and move. The only ones who stay are the ones dedicated to not having children. That's why you never see baby strollers around Vernon-Jackson in LIC or Bedford Ave Brooklyn. THIW. |

Anyway, the amazing thing about Bedford Ave in Williamsburg or LIC Gentrified area is that you can always go to the park and there are never children. It's all young couples and singles devoted to not having children. |

That is an issue, but I think that it's more than that. Couples are having fewer kids and also having kids later. That's making city living easier and more desirable for several years longer. We're seeing cities in the US flip to the European model where cities are becoming increasingly higher income and suburbs have more low income areas than before. |

Couples are having fewer kids and also having kids later.Middle class whites are certainly doing this. Minorities, mainly Hispanics, and rich whites(Upper East Side) are making babies. We're seeing cities in the US flip to the European model where cities are becoming increasingly higher income and suburbs have more low income areas than before. Yup. Just look at the Brentwood thread. Or the almost daily shootings and stabbings in and around Uniondale and Hempstead. And so many women look down on motherhood. Especially middle class white females who think life should be like Friends or Sex and the City. |
