Zimmerman and wife probably never had more than $10,000 in the bank and suddenly had access to some cash because people are tying to help him, and didn't even sit down with an attorney to go over the tax implications. It happened almost overnight. Obviously the weren't going anywhere. |

There are no income tax repercussions to a defense fund. It's a sequestered fund designed to be dipped into only by the attorney engaged in the legal defense. We've done this before and know the rules. You're not allowed to touch that money at all. And anything left over MUST be returned to the donators at the end. You don't get a penny from it. |

It was better than a month between the shooting and arrest. He hired a lawyer the following day. Over all that time you'd think he'd mention a legal defense fund he had set up online? Or even mention it to his father, a judge (maybe retired, I'm not sure)? He had plenty of time. Get over it. |

They didn't think it was money they had access to for personal use. The Zimmerman's probably thought they were supposed to show personal assets. |

Considering that she had transferred from that fund into their personal joint checking account tells me they didn't have a clue as to what they were doing, nor did they have the sense to ask anyone, like Zimmerman's father, a judge, about the website, its language and how to handle the funds.A legal defense fund is an asset the court needs to know about in a case like this, where it could figure into the setting of bail. |
