Do you actually believe that radiation in moderate quantities is good for you?To support Ann Coulter here, it's not enough to say that you aren't sure that small amounts of radiation are bad. She made a much stronger statement than that and claimed that scientific studies support her. |

But: Dr. Brenner, director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University — the oldest and largest such center in the world — found himself called on repeatedly to explain what was happening with the failed reactors and to assess the radiation risk to public health, both in Japan and around the world. ... He thinks CT scanners and the people who use them need more regulation to make sure the scans are medically needed and the doses of radiation as low as possible. He believes that even low doses increase the risk of cancer, and that there is no “safe” level or threshold below which the risk does not rise — even if that risk cannot be measured statistically. |

That's why the radiation applied is so carefully focused and controlled because they only want to kill certain cells. A blanket statement from that that radiation is somehow "good" for you is absolute shaman voodoo. The "benefit" is in KILLING. The application of radiation to biological entities doesn't IMPROVE anything other than the side-effect of killing cells you don't want to have living. And so she's back now trying to defend her theory? Wowsers. |

True story. My brother-in-law's father visited his doctor and asked: why are you prescribing this stuff for me? I've looked it up and it's a dangerous carcinogen. The doctor said, yes you're right but what do you care, if you don't take it you'll be dead in a few weeks. Even the focused radiation is only good for you in the short run. it can keep you alive but it increases your long term chances of some other cancer later. |

Do you actually believe that radiation in moderate quantities is good for you? What kind of radiation? Plain old electromagnetic radiation? Light is part of that spectrum. You haven't been following the story, I guess. This is about levels of ionizing radiation above certain government-proscribed levels, and what certain scientific authorities have said about them. To support Ann Coulter here, it's not enough to say that you aren't sure that small amounts of radiation are bad. She made a much stronger statement than that and claimed that scientific studies support her Where did she say that? |

When I threw my back out once upon a time, I got put on ACR duty--that is, I ran around the city collecting ACRs from "participating provider" hospitals, those hospitals that operate ambulances in NYC's 911 system. I got to know the staff at several of these hospitals pretty well, and I met a fellow who had similarly been put on "light" duty. Turned out he was a radiologist, and he walked me through the film-badge procedure. After a certain amount of time taking X-rays or CT scans, radiology department employees have to do something else, away from their department for a while. Those rems and rads do add up. The scrutiny DOH and the city put on portable X-ray machines in particular, and the OSHA rules governing their use are very, very stringent. But Coulter can keep right on spouting her mythology. Uranium is her friend. |

I learned more than I ever wanted to know about both nuclear power plants while at the PSC, and more than I ever wanted to know about the realities of nuclear war with NBC fire training. So I'm aware of the absolute bullshit from the media over Fukushima and what it all really means and what a real nasty scenario is like. What's going on over there is really bad, but not as bad (so far) as the media is making it out to be. And in the worst case scenario of a bomb falling somewhere, I'll either pray for being a distance away from it on a really muggy awful summer day as opposed to a crisp, cold day in January or with a front row seat right under it. :)Coulter is a total idiot, but then again no surprise there. :( |
