Obama not invited to Barney Frank's wedding

Obama not invited when Rep. Frank marries longtime partner

By Alicia M. Cohn — 05/18/12 05:04 PM ET
Although Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) earlier this month said he is “pleased” with President Obama’s decision to publicly support same-sex marriage, in a new interview the congressman revealed the president will not be on the guest list when Frank marries his longtime partner this summer.

“If he and Michelle wanted to come, I would be delighted and honored to have him, but he will bring the Secret Service,” Frank said in an interview that will air Sunday as part of C-SPAN’s “Newsmaker” series. “I would be flattered to have the president do that, [but] it would ruin the party to have the Secret Service. I’m not critical of them, but they can go take their layered protection of the president somewhere else. Not to my party.”

Frank announced in January his plans to marry longtime partner Jim Ready this July, before he retires from Congress, making him the first sitting member of Congress in a same-sex marriage.

“We’re having this in the city I live in, in Newton, Massachusetts, on a Saturday afternoon,” he told C-SPAN. “I don’t want to be accused of having shut down the entire region for a five-mile radius on a holiday weekend. I don’t want my guests going through a magnetometer.”

Massachusetts is one of six states, plus the District of Columbia, that legally recognizes marriages between couples of the same sex.

Frank has given a really good reason for not wanting the President to attend a function of his. It's a reminder of how our Presidents are now protected like third-world dictators, closing down whole sections of cities if the Prez is going to be in the area.

I recall standing on the corner of Church Avenue and Marlborough Road in 1964 to see LBJ go by with with RFK in an open car. Huge crowds, non-oppressive police presence, only a few gummint cars in the lead and after the car passed we all ran after the car until it was almost out of sight.

Mind you, this was less than half a year after JFK was assassinated in an open car in Dallas. It took us a while longer to get really paranoid.

Like 1981 when Reagan was shot?

The security is there for a reason. I agree it has become an issue more recently but with more Presidents getting death threats like Obama, what else can you do?

I agree with the USSS' thinking on Presidential security, insofar as an actual assassinatipn or attempt is on their heads. Not to mention the immediate AND historical consequences of such an untoward event.

The real reason is that Obama does not want to have his picture taken at a same sex wedding. Him clapping as he slobers his new husband is a picture which could sink him in many swing states all by itself.

That's just penis envy. Why do I say that?

For the Democrat, homosexuality is about going to a same sex wedding that's a celebration of 2 people loving each other.

For the Republican, homosexuality is about playing footsy in an airport mens room, hoping to suck some cock.

oh yeah, THIW.

Typical republican strategy seen here with the "metrosexual" wink-wink-nod-nod on Obama.

Did George Smathers really defeat Congressman Claude Pepper in a 1950 congressional election by alleging his brother was a "known homo sapien", his sister "a practicing thespian", and accusing him of "matriculating" into college, and practicing "celibacy before marriage"?

Some accept this as fact, others take it for a gag. I have a lot of doubts that these "allegations" would have actually carried through - even assuming a lot of voters in 1950 were paranoid commiephobic rubes.

Your opposition to the use of the word marriage by gay/lesbian couples has been posted by you ad nauseaum. I should expect nothing else from you.

Speaker Quinn and her new spouse Kim celebrated their WEDDING, the right to which Quinn worked long and hard to achieve for every gay and lesbian couple in New York State lo, these many years.

It was a beautiful and dignified ceremony, attended by both the Governor AND the mayor, among many others. Leave it to you to mock it...SMH!

FTR, Obama didn't get an invite to Quinn's wedding because Gov. Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg, both NY Senators, and dozens of pols from all over NYC and The People's Republic of Albany were all there. NYPD Commish Ray Kelly--ironically a possible GOP challenger to Quinn in next year's mayoral race--was also present. Adding Secret Service-level security to that of the NYPD, State Police, and DPG, would have delayed the actual start of the wedding far into the night...just sayin'...
