Pedestrians aren’t watching where they are going and they are not aware,” said Thomas Ripoli, chief of the Fort Lee Police Department. Ripoli said the borough, which is home to approximately 35,000 residents, has suffered three fatal pedestrian-involved accidents this year. He hopes his crackdown on people who display dangerous behavior while walking will make his town safer, but not everyone is on board with the idea of issuing $85 tickets. “When I walk I still look around. I’m not like constantly looking down the whole time,” said resident Sue Choe. Another woman complained about the tickets were “a lot of money.” Officers handed out pamphlets during a short grace period in March before they began aggressively going after “dangerous walkers.” More than 117 tickets have been issued, according to the New Jersey Record. Two professors at Stony Brook University in New York conducted a study on walking and texting. They found texters are 60 percent more likely to veer off line than non-texters. “We want to raise awareness that a real disruption occurs because of texting,” Eric Lamberg, co-author of the study, told Long Island Business News. “Texting disrupts your ability much more than does talking.” |

The number of pedestrians I almost ran over while biking in DC last month because they were looking down at a cell phone instead of where they were going was way too high. While I doubt this will change the behavior of many, people need to learn how to put away their cell phones, not only for safety reasons, but also so as to not miss the amazing world around them that they live in. People don't need to be in touch with each other 24/7. |

When someone's supposed freedom puts me or other law abiding people at risk. Not paying attention while crossing a street and stepping out into traffic while distracted seems to be past that line IMO. |

Maybe you should be watching out for people texting and trying to avoid them. This is a blanket ban that doesn't take into account the possibility that this activity can be performed safely. You mentioned that walking texters annoyed you while riding your bike. Well, a lot of bike riders are douchebags and dangerous when riding on sidewalks, the wrong way on one way streets, running red lights and so forth.* Maybe we should ban bike riding overall, regardless of the fact that it can be done safely and responsibly. I would actually enjoy such a ban as a hater of all the new bike lanes that Cycling Commissioner Sadik-Khan put up in NYC.*Note that all of these activities are already illegal. I wonder how exactly pedestrians bothered you while riding your bike. Were they actually jaywalking? If so, what does such a ban achieve exactly? Maybe they should enforce jaywalking laws. |

I agree with the spirit of your post in that it would be a good idea if people didn't glue themselves to their devices, but I think legislation against it is overreaching mostly since not looking where one is going usually carries its own punishment.your pal, Fred |

I'm not one of them. These walking texters stepped out in traffic when traffic was approaching without looking in any direction for oncoming vehicles and blocked the middle of the road bike lane. They were generally oblivious to verbal warnings and bell ringing to alert them to the imminent risk of an accident. In addition, on designated multi-use paths, these people are not paying attention for bicyclists wishing to pass on the left and because they aren't able to focus on staying to the right side of the path, prevent passing or create other dangerous situations.A ban on texting while walking might be extreme, but people need to pay more attention to their surroundings, both for their own safety and so as to not miss out on other things taking place around them. |

I had near accidents with more than just a few idiotic people if you ask me. This problem multiplied significantly in the past year since I was last riding in the States. I've conceded this would be pretty extreme, but the actions of the few are starting to become a larger problem for many others. |
