Feds Reject Funding of Tappanzee Bridge Replacement

Posted by Train Dude on Tue May 8 21:16:08 2012

The obama badministration rejected a $2 billion dollar loan request to fund the (shovel-ready) replacement of the Tappanzee Bridge. The DOT said that it had committed $13 billion To Other Projects.

The Tappen Zee in the way they want it, is completely useless. Rejecting future transportation demands and the price tag for that project is too much. In China they can build a 26 mile bridge for less than 2 billion!

If you read the linked article, the feds had no problem with the design but had already committed the $13 billion budgeted, elsewhere. As for China, they can do it cheaper because the use virtual slave labor.

fiogf49gjkf0d
yes but Train Dude, when the Tappen Zee costs more money per mile than SAS, there is naturally more questions... 1. why wasn't a tunnel considered as it seems the tunnel would've been cheaper if SAS can be built at 1 billion per mile. 2. how many people are getting their palms greased for this!?

Behold

I still find it amazing that a NYS public benefit corporation with the ability to issue toll backed bonds needs federal funding to pay for a new bridge, especially when the existing bridge was financed by the issuance of bonds by said PBC.

It meant a construction contract had to be awarded within three months of receipt of funding. I spend enough evenings and Sundays in 2009 and 2010 getting projects designed and out the door to know that it worked all right in the real world.

fiogf49gjkf0d
Big problem is that more than 50% of our state's lawgivers live way south of there and apparently don't care. It's a very long bridge, and that would get expensive for sure just on the basis of its length even though most of it is causeway. But there's the problem. The causeway itself was built on the cheap on wooden piles driven into the river rather than something more substantial. And those pesky sea worms have eated it.

I'd agree that a tunnel would make a lot more sense since there's plenty of big boats that pass under it requiring the height it has, maybe even more. What I *don't* get though is why they refuse to run trains over it even if they may need to add more tracks south of it since MNRR is pretty close to capacity as it is. Still ...

The new design of the Tappen Zee Bridge should be a modified version of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida. That bridge is 4 miles across and in 1987 cost 244 million. Add inflation and it cost less than 500 million. A nice cable stayed bridge 5 lanes each direction 4 for traffic 1 for dedicated bus lanes, with high speed (70mph+) EZpass. NY is way behind Florida in terms of the high speed EZpass.

Speaking of E-ZPass, it's about time they open it up to commercial applications. Like paying for parking besides at the airports, drive through food payment and possibly gas payment.

fiogf49gjkf0d
That may be, we try to avoid going to the city that way and save the tolls entirely by crossing the river up here. Sunshine looks like a pretty neat bridge too - they did a similar design in Boston. Ah well.

I wonder though if either of those do as much traffic as the Chimpan Zee? I still think it should have rails though either way ... particularly for freight. As it is now, they've got to ship all the way up here and then back south. Cutting those costs would more than pay for the bridge I'd suspect.
