Personally I don’t think Kennedy would have survived the election campaign if news were the 24-hour cycle it is today. Someone would have found out the dirt about Marilyn and that would be that.OTOH, Nixon wouldn’t have gotten past the primaries looking like he did either. |

Nixon carried the harsh, painful lessons of that early televised debate with him for the rest of your life. He even told David frost, seventeen years later, "It doesn't matter who you are. It doesn't matter what you say. What matters is how you look on television". No Presidential candidate since then has ignored this basic proinciple, with the possible exception of Walter Mondale in 1984. |

The media knew all about JFK and his women--particularly Marilyn Monroe. It was an open secret, but in those days, there was a gentlemen's understanding between the White House and the Press Corps not to print things like this. You're right, though, JFK would never have survived such a thing in today's 24-hour, feeding-frenzy news environment. You can't begin to imagine how closely the President is watched by contemporary media until you've actually been in a WH press briefing. It's INSANE. Trust me on this. |

And the fact that there are photographers and video cameras ready in case Marine 1 crashes. Which is why I, apart from constitutional ineligibility, would never make president. I would tell them to f*** off if the event were not something that was either official or political.I guess my model here is the British Royal Family, where the press are invited to cover official events, but there is some modicum of privacy afforded to purely personal and family events. |

Very wrong. He should have just said, yes, with a lack of judgement, I did have relations with "that woman", and my wife and I are working it out. Case closed. |

After years of Whitewater, dead Arkansas state troopers and a myriad of other tinfoil issues, republican henchman Ken Starr came up with nothing as to what the investigation was created for. But good old Newtie and his pals wanted Clinton badly and so this issue, which had nothing to do with what was being investigated made the political hay that they couldn't on all that tinfoil.Ah well ... between that and "wag the dog" forcing Clinton to back down and fight this instead of Al Qaeda and more pressing issues, we lost a few buildings a few years later but at least they got Clinton. Yay. :( |
