I rarely eat Subway in New York, why would I eat it in some other location? I don't generally eat chain food when I am away, as I like to try different things that I can't get home. And yet that place is booming more and more every day. Go figure ...It's simple. The demand for products and services is so high (because people want to live there) that businesses can charge the high prices, and landlords can charge the high rents. |

In all my life, I've never earned anywhere near minimum wage myself. But I've seen folks, particularly in retail earning at or only a few pennies above it and their lives suck. I can almost go for the logic of low pay for "trainees" with no experience, but if the minimum wage went away, folks with 20 years experience would probably see their pay sink.May not be an answer, but certainly makes me understand that collecting welfare might be the better life choice if you can't afford to eat on a 40 hour paycheck. |

The problem is that when it is raised it decreases profit margins and can cause the business to make do with less employees. So while the employees that remain benefit those let go and / or not hired do not. |

If a business shrinks their ranks over such things, then they either had an excess to begin with (unlikely) or their customer service will go down quickly as a result, and so will they. Yeah, with Subway it's the smell more than the food for me although I'm not a big fan of the food eitherAbout two or three years ago, a Subway opened up near my employer's office, and I was happy to have some easy access to one. So what was once a weekly affair returned to something that I eat once in a while. It really isn't that good, and FWIW, for nearly the same cost, I'd rather get a real hero from the pizzeria next door with prosciutto and mozzarella... |

Doesn't change the fact that with the exception of the tourist areas and by the airport, chain restaurants don't do all that well around here.
