Interestingly, because SAT and other achievement tests tend to overpredict NAM performance (belying any claim that the tests are culturally biased against NAMs; this implies that such tests are biased against Whites, if anything), the correct way to find the best achieving students would actualy be to apply a reverse-affirmative action of sorts, one that required a higher score by NAM applicants... |

SAT tests are excellent predictors of one's ability to do well on standardized tests. They reward hard work and kids whose parents have the time and energy to introduce their kids to intellectual concepts. They penalize laziness*, lack of interest in intellectual pursuits*, and kids whose parents are working two jobs and have no spare time. Most corporate and political leaders (if we can use those as measures of "success") did not do really well on their SAT tests. * Traits which many kids grow out of as they get older. |

In the case of the former, it prevents the populace from seeing the police as an occupying force as opposed to a group that helps them. I think though that the real reason they hate the police is because they like crime. So to answer that question: it shouldn't reflect the population.Firefighters there's no reason I can think of. |

It achieves racial balance without necessarily assigning racial preferences. California needs something like that for blacks and Hispanics to get accepted into the UC schools. UCLA has twenty-something thousand or more undergrads and their freshmen classes are only getting a couple hundred non-athletic scholarship black students. I've heard that some classes have had less than 100. |

Grades are a bigger part aren't they? Although some colleges will admit you based solely on SAT depending on your score. The problem is that in a small municipality, the populace may be mostly or entirely unqualified to be police officers anywhere else. Should this community accept having a mediocre police force? Meanwhile, in a metropolitan city, or metropolitan police forces, should police officers live in the precincts that they work or should they live anywhere in the city? What about state police forces? |
