If it weren't a sports headline I might agree that its unintentional but sports headlines almost always have two meanings and are a play on words. They are rarely that straightforward especially given the relatively obscure phrase.

Which is probably why it went through ... if it was intentional though, definitely a reason to shitcan the editor and the writer for it. I can only assume here, and base my judgement on what is proper editorial practice for a news organization. I don't do ESPN, so I'm not aware of their standard modus operendi there. Then again, ESPN is Disney and so they should have been extra fearful of the rodent no matter what. :)

In computer security (which is what I do now) the term "chink in the armor" is often used to describe bad security policy and there's lots of Asians in this industry. I haven't noticed anyone getting miffed when I use the phrase in its proper context. But then again, I don't work for the mouse either. :)

Yeah, it's not an offensive expression in and of itself. It would only be offensive if it were intentionally used to describe someone that is Chinese as a play on words.

This episode though is causing me to reconsider the use of that term even where appropriate. As to the ESPN episode, I saw the sportscaster bit and paid close attention to his timing. I'd vote him not guilty. As to the rest, looks like it could have been intentional but I have no way to judge it without knowing their normal attitude. But still ... it's annoying that you used to be able to tell the players without a score card. :)

Even stranger is that there doesn't seem to be a whole outpouring of butthurt among many Asians over it all. Makes me confoosed it does. :)

Some Asian group complained, but in general Asians aren't quite as sensitive or at least as vocal as other minorities. Perhaps because they tend to be more successful than other minorities. Certainly they endure more than their fair share of stereotypes.

Yep ... I dunno ... lots of folks take too much shit WAY too seriously. Racism is a bad thing, but oversensitivity has its repercussions as well if it wasn't actually there. That's what kinda has my head spinning over this one ... I'm still not certain of the intent. Used to be that it was quite blatant and obvious, this time still not so sure.

And like "antisemite" here ... yep. The reason why I'm watching this one though is that I've often used "chinks in the armor" with respect to dinged metal in network firewalls and other potential security boners and never occurred to me that it could ever be taken to mean Asians. Since I've used that phrase often in my presentations, this has me curious as to what the ESPN folks were on about. Personally I find the "Lin-this" and "Lin-that" pretty annoying too. :)
