Looks like many suburbs are less safe that some urban areas. At one job I had a customer who ran a long-distance calling center up in Washington Heights. I had to visit his location (near W 181 St) and was nervous about it. It was a busy thriving safe area packed with people. Couldn't have been safer. Streets packed with people shopping. Our sales manager was with me and we were talking about the area and he told me that Washington Heights and Harlem were safer than places like Spring Valley up near where he lived in Rockland County. |

Brentwood residents turn to online police reports |
|
|
Posted by DAnd124 on Wed Dec 28 23:33:28 2011, in response to The New Brentwood Thread, posted by LuchAAA on Sun Aug 21 16:33:18 2011. http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_19633379In a bedroom community like Brentwood where the majority of residents commute to work outside the area, the ability to quickly report a minor crime online is a major convenience, Brentwood police Lt. Tom Hansen said. "If something happens and people discover those incidents on their way to work in the morning, it is a great service," Hansen said of the department's online police report system. "All they need is a police report for their insurance. A lot of people don't have the time to sit around and wait for a police officer." The department started the online-reporting program last year, and Hansen noted that about 20 to 25 crimes are reported per month through the website. The minor crimes that can be reported on the website are hit-and-runs, identity theft, grand theft, vandalism, lost property and harassing phone calls. "On some months, we get quite a few for whatever reason," Hansen said. "We did it as a service to our citizens but not to take the place of our response. If one of our citizens wants a police officer, we will come out." The number of crimes reported online increased from 109 last year to 172 at the beginning of this month, Brentwood City Manager Paul Eldredge said. "The Brentwood Police Department's online police reports have increased as more residents are becoming aware of its availability," he said. Crimes that involve leads or witnesses cannot be reported online because local law enforcement needs to visit the scene to collect evidence and investigate, Hansen said. Many cities have established similar online-reporting programs as a supplemental service to residents, according to Hansen. "Sometimes people will try to use it for crimes that don't fit the criteria," he said. "This is all about a service to our community." Hansen said the process is simple and self-explanatory, and a sergeant will review all reports to ensure that they are properly completed and appropriate. It also can be used to submit a vacation watch to the police department for extra patrols, and the entire service is available in Spanish. Online reporting is a new technology that is relatively inexpensive and was easy to implement, Hansen said. Another informational feature to the Police Department's website is the public police logs with all reported crime in the city each week. |

Brentwood borough named fifth best place to live in the country |

|
Posted by DAnd124 on Thu Dec 29 12:23:01 2011, in response to The New Brentwood Thread, posted by LuchAAA on Sun Aug 21 16:33:18 2011. http://www.thisistotalessex.co.uk/Brentwood-borough-named-fifth-best-place-live/story-14259652-detail/story.htmlBRENTWOOD has been rated the fifth best place to live in the UK, after rocketing up 13 places in a national league table. Good health and long life expectancy, decent employment prospects, relatively low crime rates and decent weather have all combined to make Brentwood one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, according to the sixth annual Halifax Quality of Life Survey. Just the borough of Hart, in the North East tip of Hampshire, Elmbridge in Surrey, Wokingham in Berkshire and East Cambridgeshire sit above Brentwood on the list that rates the standard of people's living. The survey published this week, ranks all 405 local authorities based on key indicators covering the labour market, housing, the environment, education and health. Specific factors helping make Brentwood such a good place to live include its 80.5 per cent employment rate, higher than any of the other four areas rated above it. Also, its average life expectancy for men, which stands at 81.1 years, is a bonus and a huge 94 per cent of its residents in fairly or good health. Brentwood has outperformed some notably wealthy boroughs, including Richmond and Tunbridge Wells, which came 11th and 12th in the latest Halifax quality of life survey. It comes top among Essex boroughs. The next most desirable in Essex – Uttlesford came 18th on the list. Neighbouring Chelmsford appeared at number 39. With convenient and regular train services in and out of Liverpool Street, Brentwood has always been a popular commuter town. It also stands to be a major beneficiary of Crossrail, which will start operating in 2018. Natalie and Mark Hodgson, have lived together in Rayleigh Road, Hutton, for a year. They have two children, Thomas, two, and Charlotte, ten months. Natalie, 35, said: "It's got lots of nice homes and the people are really nice and it's got a very good commute to London for work." Mark, 33, who moved to Hutton, from East Yorkshire, said: "I think Essex is similar in many respects to where I come from. "But I think there is a bit more going on here than in my home town and maybe down here it's a bit more prosperous." Kate Phillips, a 19-year-old nanny who has lived in Brentwood all of her life, said: "The people make Brentwood great. I love King George's playing fields – the area is very relaxing. I just like the calmness here." Mother-of-two Shelly Kenny, 42, from Hutton, said: "Brentwood is very peaceful and I like the mix of modern buildings and historic listed ones. "It all gives it a very village feel with a great sense of community." A thrilled Louise McKinlay, leader of Brentwood Borough Council, said: "Our borough is a fantastic place to live and work, with great schools, beautiful parks and open spaces, strong commuter links and a thriving local economy, based on a good mix of small and large enterprise." But living the good life comes with a price – average house prices in Brentwood are 5.4 times the average local earnings, which is higher than the UK average ration of 5.25. But that has not stopped people buying. Testament to that is the low number of properties standing empty. Latest figures for Brentwood show there are just 17 council homes and 512 private homes that are empty – a percentage of just 0.7 per cent. Any new properties are also quickly snapped up. Gareth Jacob, Sales Director at Linden Homes, which is currently redeveloping the former Highwood Hospital site, in Geary Drive, off Ongar Road, said: "Brentwood has always been a much sought after place to live, boasting the best of urban and suburban living. "Only 18 miles from the City yet with an overtly leafy feel, the town has a range of amenities on its doorstep, including an excellent choice of local schools and wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants." |

Jarvis, a CPA with more than 20 years of accounting experience, has been hired to fill Brentwood's newly created finance director position. For the last 14 years, Jarvis worked in finance positions with two cities in Washington state. Most recently, she served as the fiscal services director for Renton, Wash., the 10th largest city in the state. Jarvis began her accounting career in 1990 as a staff auditor in the Missouri State Auditor's Office. City Administrator Bola Akande, Mayor Pat Kelly and the Board of Alderman created the position to provide additional financial oversight for the city. Akande said Jarvis "will help with our efforts to strengthen the city of Brentwood's fiscal management." Mayor Pat Kelly said that, in the 10 years he's been in that post, the city has seen its annual operating budget increase from $8.8 million to $15.6 million. He said hiring Jarvis "increases the level of transparency and professionalism in our financial management and enables us to better serve the citizens of Brentwood." The crowd of mostly elementary school children skated on a synthetic ice rink and sledded down a couple of snowy slopes during the free weeklong event that ended Friday at the Roberto Clemente Park. The Town of Islip sponsored the festival and even provided a snow-making machine that created two slippery sledding hills. Many children, clad in T-shirts befitting the rather warm weather, slid down despite the slushy conditions. Things began to resemble a laundry detergent commercial when small groups of kids covered in mud scampered up and down the icy expanse with dirt-smeared sleds in tow. Large puddles at the bottom of each slope put a damper on a few young sledders like Jackie King and Lea Roitberg. The 8-year-old girls had streaks of mud from melting snow on their jackets and pants after a couple of runs on their purple sled. “I’m not doing that again,” said Lea when she and Jackie had climbed back up the hill after a messy but giggly ride. Both girls seemed to prefer the ice skating rink constructed for the event. The “ice” was actually a hard plastic, slippery despite its non-water surface. “She’s starting to get the hang of it,” said Argie Gemelas, of Bayshore, as she twirled her giggling 2-year-old daughter, Leeyana Stricklin, who didn’t seem to mind falling a few times. But not all were impressed. A disappointed Charles King wore his Rangers jersey and brought a couple pairs of sharp skates before he realized that he was a bit over-prepared. “I thought it was going to be real ice,” he said with a laugh. |

I can't recall a New Year's Day when people were walking around with open coats and some even without coats. I initially was a global warming skeptic, but the evidence is starting to add up. |

My first trip to Syracuse was in January 1996. It was 64F the first day that I arrived. By the time that I left 2 weeks later we had about 2 or 3 feet of snow. |

Why do you always bring up Wyandanch? You did it again in this thread. Aside from the NYCT Bus Operator shot to death during a drive-by at a party in Wyandanch, I don't really see too many stories about shootings and stabbings in that town. Wyandanch has a "rep" for sure, but I just don't see it making headlines nearly as much as other nearby towns. All I know is that N. Amityville has a huge Latino population. Go there and see. Huntington Station made headlines in the last year regarding shootings near a school related to MS-13 and Latin Kings activity. |

Wyandanch is worse than Brentwood, but still better than Hempstead, which you also neglect to mention due to your raging bias. All I know is that N. Amityville has a huge Latino population. Go there and see. Huntington Station made headlines in the last year regarding shootings near a school related to MS-13 and Latin Kings activity. No doubt, but stats are stats and North Amityville is still a mostly black neighborhood, and has been historically for the past 40 or so years like the other predominately black neighborhoods in Suffolk County in Gordon Heights, Wheatley Heights, and Wyandanch. Those Huntington Station shootings don't concern me, especially since suburban people tend to exaggerate when it comes to crime in their area. |

I don't have a bias. I have said that there is crime beyond Brentwood. As for Wyandanch, it just does not seem to have as many shootings and stabbings as nearby towns do. Stats may say it's dangerous, but I guess Newsday and Long Island Press simply neglect to report the stories, which is what I go by. N. Amityville is a huge barrio now. I looked at wikipedia 2000 stats. I'd like to see 2010. No way Hispanics are only 13% of N. Amityville population today. |

Gordon Heights and N Amityville are terrrible neighborhoods, just like Wyandanch. You are right about Wheatly Heights, it's income is probably similar to the better Black neighborhoods in Southeastern Queens. |

No really, who gives a crap though? N Amityville has been terrible since the 60's. Just like almost all the neighborhoods you complain about, it's nothing new. |
