The other shoe drops: Byebye American AAA

Hot off the wires ... Standard & Poors is dropping America from its AAA status to lower. HOPE is that it will only be to AA, but until they announce later tonight, it's possible that it might go even lower.

Hope you republicans are happy with what you've done ...

"Officials reasons given will be the political confusion surrounding the process of raising the debt ceiling, and lack of confidence that the political system will be able to agree to more deficit reduction. A source says Republicans saying that they refuse to accept any tax increases as part of a larger deal will be part of the reason cited."

The only good news is that substantially higher interest rates on the middle class will give us a higher rate of return on our money. Great job, republicans!

Nah ... couldn't be ... those are the same ratings agencies that "bought more house than they could afford" ... well ... banks moved on the story before close of business today, should be quite interesting to see how much damage they did.

Kinda sad that Obama knows more about math than the bankers. But then that ain't news either. :)

About fucking time.

Allegations Against Italy Analysts 'Entirely Founded'
Published: Friday, 5 Aug 2011
By: Catherine Boyle, Staff Writer and Vittoria Pirone, Associate Producer, CNBC

The big ratings agencies have been blamed for much during the credit crisis, but they hadn't been raided by any of the countries they've threatened with downgrades, until Wednesday.

Now three Standard & Poor's analysts and one from Moody's are under investigation by Italian police.

Prosecutor Michele Ruggiero, from the small Italian town of Trani, told CNBC that the four were being investigated.

Legal representatives at the agencies' Milan office, while they are not held directly responsible, need to be added to the probe according to Italian law.

"The probe was initiated by very specific complaints by consumer groups," Ruggiero told CNBC.

"Following complaints, prosecutors held consultations with government officials including Finance Minister Tremonti, who all distance themselves from rating actions and warnings by agencies, saying that their judgment does not reflect the fundamentals of the Italian economy."

He personally believes that the allegations are "entirely founded."

As under-fire Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi prepared to address his parliament about the state of the nation's economy on Wednesday, Italian police raided the Milan offices of Moody's and Standard & Poor's.

The raid came as both agencies pondered a further downgrade of Italy's sovereign debt after concerns about the country's debt-to-GDP ratio, the second highest in the euro zone after Greece.

It is in increasing danger of being lumped in with Greece, Spain, Ireland and the other euro zone economies perceived as vulnerable.

Italian market regulator Consob has been asked to provide documents relating to the credit agencies' Italian registration.

S&P said it believed the probe was "groundless" in a statement.

"We strongly defend our work, our reputation and that of our analysts," it added.

Rival Moody's said it "takes its responsibilities surrounding the dissemination of market sensitive information very seriously and is cooperating with the authorities."

Both agencies have raised concerns about Italy's debt and its exposure to contagion from the crisis in Greece. In contrast, Fitch Ratings, said last month that Italy's austerity package would help stabilize the economy.

The current investigation came after consumer groups objected to the agencies warning that they were considering downgrading Italian sovereign debt.

The Moody's analyst is being investigated over events in May 2010, while the S&P analysts' actions between 20 and 23 May 2011 and beginning of July 2011 are being probed.

Elio Lannutti, president of Adusbef, one of the consumer groups that sparked the inquiry, said: "The three 'sisters' – Standard & Poor's, Moody's and Fitch – are an erratic danger to state sovereignty in the areas of economics and finance".

Several mass selloffs on the Italian stock market in the past month show how shaky Italy's international reputation is at the moment.

Berlusconi insisted in his speech on Wednesday, after Italy was targeted by so-called "bond vigilantes" who drove yields on its bonds above the critical 6 percent level, that the country, one of the world's largest economies, is "economically and financially solid."

Despite this, speculation that the European Central Bank may have to intervene to help out Italy continues.

The country's size makes it both more important to the euro zone, and harder to bail out, than a smaller player like Greece or Ireland.

I dispise the ratings systems, it really is counter productive. A negative rating makes it harder to get good rates which in turn makes it more difficult to get out of any mess you may be in. However this might be the wake up call the GOP needs to accept more radical cuts or raising revenue with tax increases. If the US just invested 2 trillion into infrastructure repair it would result in millions of new jobs as the US gives itself the infrastructure for the 21st century to compete with other nations and the construction would boost the economy with the new jobs created. With the new jobs and perhaps a tax increase that 2.1 trillion could pay itself off rather quickly.

also the US should take over the building of telecommunication lines and fiber optic lines and then lease them to companies so that there are more companies and then in turn lower prices to the consumer. The US needs to take the lead again. Right now I understand the need to cut spending but to get out of this mess, we need to spend and get our country in a competitive position.

I think it's too late for any of that now. Before deciding today, they went back to Boner and turtleman to see if there was any hope of stimulus and tax hikes to fix the problem. The resounding "NO!" from the GOP was the final straw for S&P. And the drop to AA+ isn't the end, they slapped a negative on that as well which puts us automatically into another downgrade as soom as the bozos come back from their vacation to put America through more of the same.

Meanwhile, the shitstains known as republicans are blaming Obama and calling him Carter. And Wall Street hadn't programmed this into their dump this past week so byebye 401k and up goes your mortgage. And the repulitards will cheer and point at everybody else since the "party of responsibility" never was nor will be.

KRUGMAN was right. Again. :(

Ah well ... at least the banks will come out of this stronger. We're now officially weaker than Britain, France, Germany and many other nations and on a par with Italy. And in the NEXT downgrade, we go to Greek status. Yay, righties ... helluva job, Brownie. Keep them tax cuts coming!

I'm so glad that we bailed when we did ... those who didn't are in for one serious world of hurt. Our parents lived through the last republican dream and warned us what was coming.

Heh. Actually, the timing of all this stupid fell outside of the development cycle, so no effect on us there. The next kernel revision of BSD is about to start its annual beta cycle, so had this happened at the end of this month it would have been a different story. Timeline is to start our own beta cycle in October, release in December as is usually the case.

And no, don't believe in FOREX - we have people that do that and our money lady is MOST skilled. :)

I agree with this much of your post. Such companies only spread false rumors, whether they be ridiculously positive about a mortgage-based security not being a crock of shit or ridiculously negative about the USA. We don't need them to tell us the Greek economy is in a mess: any idiot can see that. All these credit rumor agencies achieve is to cause complacency and panic. They are a blight on the economy and should be made illegal.
