In addition to Shoreham being a poorly designed plant, the major issue there wasn't as much the reactor as the fact that in the event of an emergency, there was no viable escape route that could evacuate the area quickly enough if it ever needed to happen. That was the primary issue there.

Maybe its time for the US to join the rest of the world and start taxing vehicle owners on a graduated scale for driving big cars. In Israel, I believe that any vehicle with an engine displacement of 1.8 liters or smaller is not taxed but once you get up to 2.0 liters and higher, you get taxed more.

I understand that this would destroy the US auto industry, but it might become necessary.

I think keeping the tax on gas, maybe kicking it up a small amount, is plenty fair. The owner of vehicles that burn more gas will pay more for gas and also pay more tax. If they choose to drive less to save money, great.

Buying stuff online won't help the stores, who won't need their workers and start laying off. Also, driving less will also have less people eating at restaurants, etc too. Can't do that online. Buying online also does not allow for spur of the moment purchases shoppers do when browsing.
As for "driving if they want to more, they can't if they put all their budgeted money in it for the more expensive gas.

How about increased licensing costs for bigger automobiles? Small, efficient cars would pay much less.

The US auto industry would produce smaller more efficient cars and less big cars. If they don't, they go out of business.

I didn't say that one way or another, nor did I claim you did. But "regime change" is the excuse for the speculators, pushing prices WAY up past any market shift values for the potential losses. This is nothing more than a cash grab at the levels it is right now. There will be no prosecution of course.

Longer term though, this shouldn't be a surprise. This isn't the first time this game has been played, and it won't be the last. And we'll be setting a new benchmark as the rest of the world's economy moves forward as we choke our own like the EU did last year. Now WE"RE doing it.

Meanwhile, people are buying guzzlers again and completely oblivious to the lessons that could have been learned in the last warning. And we could have remained on the path to alternatives. But those got shouted down. Ah well ... we pay then. We could have made an economy out of fixing the problem, but instead we gave it to China.

Too European a solution.

We do tax credits for good behavior rather that taxes for bad behavior.

It works in Europe and in Israel, where gas is a lot more expensive than it is here. Europe has had $8 gas for quite some time, and Israel sells gas by the liter, not the gallon, so it seems like you're paying less but you aren't.
