When you have 153 seats up for grabs in the 2004 election and not one changes hands you know the politicos have feathered their own nest, and when we spend more than we take in it means we have to raise taxes to cover that. And what that does is hurt the middle class who have to scrounge to save to buy a home, save to send their kids to college, and scrounge to have a decent nestegg for their retirement. How is it that today kids leaving college are in debt up to their eyeballs but when I left school I still had a little in savings; in other words, I was in the black and not in the red. How come today's 30 and 40 year olds cannot save enough or invest enough to have a nestegg like my wife and I have? Sir, the answer is taxes and the fact that the government uses us for a bank. |

Given that taxes (except at the local level owing to unfunded mandates) are CONSIDERABLY down compared to years ago, the answer to the musical question is that the days of "union wages" are gone entirely and now people aren't being paid enough to meet their expenses any longer.But thanks to the GOP mandating this that and the other thing, and not paying for them, pushing the costs off to the village level of government who cannot refuse to perform the unfunded services, there are now folks whose taxes exceed their income by a large amount. I'm one of those. I still ain't been able to pay my 167% tax rate. :( |

I'll affirm Dan Lawrence and raise you Eisenhower Federal Highway system. But in addition to that, we've had a republican congress now since those midterm elections. "No Child Left behind" only ramped it up to ludicrous speed. The SINGLE largest reason for my taxes being nearly double my income is SCHOOL TAXES. We'll forget about all the other useless things I have to pay for.But no, I understand that sunspots are Clinton's fault too as is acne and farmer's lung ... but I'd look a little bit closer. :) |
