How much is your health insurance going up?

Posted by Easy on Sun Nov 7 13:22:46 2010

My company sponsored HSA is going up only $25/month, but people that make less money will have theirs go down. Obamacare is fairly insignificant for me as far as the price goes, but some of our PPO plans are increasing almost $1,000 per year so it could be significant for others. On other forums people are saying that their plans are increasing over $1,500 per year!

However for families of 4 that make under $88000 a year get a tax credit so that 1,500 is off set for most by the tax credit being received.

But on your HSA you can't buy tylenol and band-aids anymore. Obama won't even let you have those painpills he brags about. And if you do, the tax punishment increases to 40%.

As for if my insurance going up. None. It's free remember?

I have to doublecheck this during the week, it looks like more than 100%..

Yea, this is bad. The bare Minimum super HSA plan that I didn't even use went from FREE to about 40/month for one person coverage. So you can imagine the increases in the other coverage levels.

This is not a company that buffers increases to be nice. Or even that far removed from insurance.

First of all there is no tax CREDIT - insurance premiums are deductible and even then are subject to relatively high thresholds. If someone does not qualify to itemize then the tax deduction for health insurance is MEANINGLESS!

A deduction is not worth the same as a tax credit - deductions only offset income, so an additional $1500 deduction to someone in the 20% tax bracket only recoups $300 CASH - he is still $1,200 OUT OF POCKET.

Also if you are paying that cost out of your paycheck and live paycheck to paycheck a tax DEDUCTION is irrelevant if you have to borrow $1500 per year additional from your credit card in order to make up the shortfall in CASH FLOW.

People are going to start dropping health insurance - welcome to Obamacare

There hasn't been much medical cost inflation the last 2 years because so many people can't afford to see a doctor that demand has gone down.

And ours hardly went up depending on how much you made. Some people were upset that those that made are now paying more since we all used to pay the same. I hadn't realized that would be required under Obamacare, but it doesn't bother me. Not to sound like a socialist, but that seems fair to me.

If we had a payroll tax based Medicare-for-all single payer system, "premiums" would have hardly budged for most people in the last ten years since median wages have been flat. (after all, somebody making roughly the same today as he did 10 years isn't paying more existing Medicare tax).
OTOH, health insurance premiums, deductibles, out of pocket costs, etc, have skyrocketed resulting in less take home pay which means less consumer spending and other things once the credit line ran out.
The vampiric health insurance companies are one of the reasons we are in the rut we are today.
They need to be legislatively outlawed.

Our HSA will now have two different plans with two different deductibles. If I choose the plan most similar to the one that I have now ($2,400 deductible versus $2,500 now) my premium increases $1,200 per year! Plus my employer only matches my extra up to $1,000 versus $1,200 currently. Total difference of $1,400 per year!

If I choose the $5,000 deductible then my costs go up by only $25 per month and my employer matches up to $1,400 but then I have a huge deductible.

1. Since 1999, health insurance premiums for families rose 131%, Prescription Drugs have also increased by 4% a year both outpacing inflation and wage increases...

So to blame your increase on Obamacare is wrong, because what you're saying is this increase is strictly because of Obamacare which is not the case, you've been paying more every year its just this year you noticed because of Obamacare and opponents are making you notice just so they can try to tie it in.

2. There will be a tax credit that will be implemented in 2014 for those who are below certain amount thresholds i.e. families of 4 who make less than $88000 a year.

First of all health insurance didn't go up 11% every year. Most of that increase was probably several years ago. Second of all as I have already explained some portion of the increase is directly attributable to Obamacare. For example suppose that some company had the following increases for this year based on employee salaries:

< $30,000 - 10% decrease
$30k-$60k - 2 % increase
$60k-$90k - 10% increase
> $90,000 - 30% increase

Now suppose that you are accurate and that this represents an overall 11% increase. Can you not understand that the increase for the highest bracket is directly related to Obamacare?!?

My company had 2 levels of HSA's too. The higher deductible one actually started two years ago and was FREE(we're non-union, American Free-market...well the 5% of us who ain't in India. You know the place the so called president said is a job creator).

Last year they started to charge. But if you fill out the questionaire the credits would make it free anyway.

Employee only coverage is 1077.5% increase
Family is a 631% increase for this level since last year.

Now the company has been trying to push you into this new health program where you give them you biometric info(yea right) instead of having a questionaire. so if yo were gungho about doing all the test it would come back down to
just an 8% increase for single and 4% for family. For the year.

What's next DNA samples?? I think going into work to get all this "work" done to you for a 1000 buck credit on your benefits is pushing it imo.

Your post did not explain this creepy line, nor why you think we should get rid of Wal-mart and only buy food from State Stores like they do with liquer in PA.

Nor why we should have another hidden tax, as they all must go up just as much. Like the public option home insurance, public option universities, public option road and car fees. All which have a disregard for inflation.

No no no. You see, you come home everynight and you trip over an ottoman for years.
One night you get mugged and roughed up bad. But since you have had a bruise from the ottoman it's not from being jumped.

It's perfectly logical. Oh and btw, all that money they stole from you, it'll be some tax credit that will take 4 hours and 6 pages of math to figure out NEXT year where it'll just move your bracket a bit so you'll get back 1% of what was stolen.

I don't know what's so hard to figure out.

I think all the companies I've worked for had income brackets for the premiums. Always thought it seemed odd though.

In the end OBOMACARES biggest failures (and they were failures on purposes

was to reduce all the sometimes fake lawsuits that even when a doctor did not act in bad faith costs a ton in legal fees to defend and all the un needed tests that get performed even know the doctor knows that the test is not medically needed it is needed to cover his or her fanny. This one change alone would cut the premiums

second subjecting the insurers to UNLIMITED liability sounds like a good idea but raises everyone's cost. a better idea would be for the government to come in and pay any amount over the lifetime cap of the plan so a disease of a family member does not cause someone to loose their house. This cost far less then the tax and spend OBOMACARE scheme.

FYI it is going to cost the IRS and other federal agencies ten of billions of $$$ to police this bill. That means billions in cost that are not going to take care of people health.

This bill is a crime and needs to be changed and not in the way the Republican Right want to change . We need some common sense in these matters
