Tea Party Sayz Bring Back Litteracy Tests to Vote |
|
|
Posted by Jersey Mike on Sat Feb 6 20:02:55 2010 In a speech that was perhaps shockingly predictable, Republican congressman Tom Tancredo suggested in his opening speech at the Tea Party convention that old school literacy tests should be brought back to prevent people like President Obama from ever being elected again. Such tests, outlawed by the 1965 voting rights act, were notorious for disenfranchising black and other minority voters.http://rawstory.com/2010/02/tea-party-opening-speaker-suggests-blacks-voting/ Ah the Tea Party, where they party like its 1899. |

You should watch Arianna Cuntington on MSNBC complaining about Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Rahm Emanuel. If an active elected official had used the word "retard" or "retarded", then Cuntington would have a valid argument.Do you interpret "Take our country back", as a call to white people get out and vote before tenemos que hablar espanol? Kind of a rallying cry? Is that how you see it? Giving Palin $100,000 to speak was a big mistake. |

Well, I still don't want her around right now. She quit her job, wrote a book, and took a job with Fox News. I believe the Tea Party denied Michael Steele a chance to speak at one of their earlier rallies, so it does not look good that she gets to be the star tonight. |

Again, the Tea Party is not a GOP organization. |

Haha, The Raw Story aka The Left Story. I see they (and others) inserted a comma that should not be there, in between the words "civics" and "literacy". The other leftist sites (Democratic Underground, Think Progress, Media Matters, Arianna's website) are all on fire over the "civics literacy test"; and one of those sites did have a suggestion that I agree with (from the comments section), that politicians themselves ought to be subject to testing of their civics literacy.Besides, being tested on one's civics literacy can be dangerous, because one can have knowledge of the system while using said knowledge to subvert the system; therefore, you'd have far-rightists or far-leftists voting for candidates that would turn the country in a truly radical direction. |

I'd suggest you can do you're own at the mall, however, I have no proof or citation that you have the mental capacity to administer such a test.Considering the amount of times you've asked for a source of a story when the source and/or link was the first line. To be terse, as you don't understand how to read the format of print news, why waste my time citing things I can hear on the street and everybody knows? |

The reason why I have asked for a source is because the original claim is based on something that can't be proven...such as is the case here.In addition, it's unconstitutional to require a literacy test. |

I would support the ban being repealed if states would administer a uniform test. Because we all know that the business of elections is infected with partisanship, I have no confidence that would in fact happen. You'd just have the dominant party cutting down its enemies at the polls. Also, to the extent that the charge that President Obama was elected by elites and upper class folk is correct, it should be recalled that those individuals tend to have higher IQs and thus to be better test takers, so Mr. Tancredo would be quite wrong. All that said, it was an amazingly stupid thing for Mr. Tancredo to say. So much for the organizers of this Tea Party convention who said that they'd eliminate the 'crazies' - they missed one, and he shot them all in the foot. |
