The biggest complaint anywhere is infrequent buses. Heck, people whine about infrequent buses in SF all the time and most of the major routes during the week are on 5 - 10 minute headways with weekend headways in the 8- 15 minute range (ok, a few routes are 30 min).

I've had a hit or miss in the San Diego area. I don't think that the Mexican food in California (either SoCal or NorCal) has as much flavor as Mexican food in Arizona and New Mexico. Maybe, though, it's because I have a preference for food with a lot of hot spices and chilies.

The best Chinese food that I've had was a tie between Little Saigon in Westminster, CA and in SF.
Mexican- a liquor store in Orange County that sold out its name to the restaurant next door and now sucks
Italian- SF, but I don't eat Italian all that much.
Steak- one of those private supper club type places in Arkansas. Or maybe it was Mississippi.
Thai-DC
Ethiopian- DC
Sushi- Orange County
BBQ-Tulsa
Soul Food-LA
Jamaican-I've only had it in LA and Honolulu and LA's is much better!
Seafood-Hawaii
West African-LA, but probably more in DC but I never ate it there

I'm not really a foodie. As long as it's not bad it's cool with me. It doesn't have to be great.

I am like that in general too, at least with most foods. That's not that many things I would "send back", I am usually satisfied....although obviously sometimes like things better than others.

While I have had PLENTY of good food of all types in NY, if I am thinking of a place where I like the food the best, it has to be New Orleans....some of the best food I have had in my life. A second toss up would be Southern California....San Diego. Third would be some of the BBQ I have had in the Midwest.
Just about every part of the country has "something".

I don't really like Mexican food all that much. I mean I like it but it all seems so similar to me. Beans, tortilla, meat, and sauce. That's like half the menu! j/k...well halfway

The times that I've had the best Mexican food were when Mexicans took me there. Same with Chinese food. I don't know where you ate, but IMO if you eat at an ethnic restaurant and most of the customers are not that ethnicity, then it might be more bland than it's supposed to taste.

I agree with New Orleans although the best gumbo that I ever had was made by a former coworkers father. Also, I've since found out that New Orleans creole food (gumbo, jambalaya, etouffee, etc) is very similar to West African food and I think that I like those as much or maybe more.

I don't think most Americans can handle "real" Chinese or "real" Mexican food. I have had "real" Mexican food, and I do like it too, but I think most people here are used to "American Mexican" or "Tex-mex" food.

That's the problem that my pizzeria by work has, and it's why a number of my co-workers avail themselves of other options. Sadly, thirty minutes isn't enough to go run down to Wendy's or McDonalds, thus leaving either Chinese take-out, Subway, or deliveries from so-so diners and cafes in the area.

Thats the problem in NY too. There's a Cajun or Creole place on 9th ave in Manhattan, and it's "okay", but it's not the same, and like everything else in Manhattan, it's overpriced.
I don't know of any others in the Metro area, and if there are, I am sure it's expensive for what you get too.

The best Mexican food I've had was in Texas. The kind of places where you are eating in what looks like the familiy's dining room and the family is bringing the food out and where actual Mexican people are eating.
I'm not much of a Mexican food fan but that stuff was good.

You could probably pick almost any food and there will most likely be one or more restaurants in NYC that is good to excellent. But NYC may not be the leader in that cuisine. For example there are probably good Cuban restaurants in NYC, but my guess is that the best in the US are in Miami. When I think of cities that have the best of any particular cuisine the only one that really comes to mind for me for NYC is Italian. Probably Caribbean, but I never had it there. Probably some lessor known cuisines, like Russian, etc as well.

Italian- NY
Steak- Texas or maybe KC
Thai- No idea. Maybe LA.

BBQ- Various southern places. KC sounds pretty good.
Soul Food- Various southern places. Savannah, GA sounds as good as anywhere else

Brazilian- No idea. NY sounds good

Those are reasonable guesses based on immigration patterns.
I disagree with the steak part. I've had steak everywhere I've been and while some places have excellent steaks, no place has the depht of NY. I've never been to SoCal so I can't judge it.
I would agree in theory that Detroit probably has the best Middle Eastern food but I haven't been there either.
You can't go wrong in the DC area though.

I've had various good Creole food experiences but I will withold judgement until I eat the real stuff in NO.

Chicago and St Louis are supposed to have great German food but I haven't eaten it when I was there.
I also agree with your Americanized vs. Authentic Chinese food distinction with regard to NY/SF.

I wouldn't know where the best Russian or Korean food is because I don't care for the stuff though Ukrainian style cold-cuts are good.
I really loved Indonesian food when I was in Amsterdam and Singapore but I haven't found a place in the US yet. It's even better than Thai. I haven't found a good Hungarian place either.

I included Bengali food with Indian food in my list and lumped North African food with Middle Eastern even though Moroccan food is somewhat different.

I have tried to explain that to him numerous times. He keeps assuming that when a restaurant outside of NY says they have "NY pizza", that that is what he is eating. I have NEVER had real "NY Pizza" outside NY. It's hard enough to find good "NY Pizza" in Nassau and Suffolk, and even with in the city itself, much less outside the NY Metro area. Connecticut comes somewhat close, but again, it's hit or miss there too, just like out on Long Island.

Agreed. If people think that a place that says "NY Pizza" is the actual real NY pizza, then the "Olive Garden" must be real Italian food because they say so.

Long Island has some decent pizza. I remember posting Newsday's list of "Long Island's Best Pizza". Umberto's in New Hyde Park was really good when I had it last month.

I don't think LA has the best Mexican food either. The best Mexican food (at least that I have had) was in the San Diego area.

I've never been to southern California (at least no farther south and not much father west than Baker), but I can say there's excellent Mexican food in Chicago, especially from the Michoacan region.

I don't see why you couldn't get Chicago style pizza in NYC and vice versa. And I have had NY pizza in the NY metro area. Probably not at any of the welll regarded places, but I've had it in NJ, upstate NY, Manhattan, and Coney Island. And lots of cities have pizza restaurants that are operated by owners that used to operate pizza restaurants in NYC. I've been to 2 or 3 of those.

I've yet to find Chicago-style pizza outside of Chicago and suburbs. You can get New York style pizza in Chicago.

How would you know? And that doesn't even make sense. Why would it be that you can find quality restaurants for all of these different ethnic foods all over the country, except for pizza which can for some reason only be made in good quality in the city where it originated?

You must not have looked. They have Chicago deep dish pizza everywhere. The best deep dish pizza - and the best pizza in general - that I ever had was at Pizza Papalis in Detroit. Words couldn't begin to describe how much better that is than the flatbread with tomato sauce that they call pizza in NY.

Because I have had pizza that calls itself "NY Pizza", and it's NOT. SMAZ is right too, I have had "Chicago Pizza" in a few places outside chicago, and regardless of their claim that it's "Chicago pizza", it's not.

I have had "Deepdish" pizza in many places too, but it's NOT like what you get in Chicago, just like all "thin crust" pizza is NOT NY Pizza.
Just because it's "deep dish" pizza, and it calls itself "Chicago Pizza", doesn't mean it's the same, or as good as you get in Chicago.
And just because it's a thin crust pizza with tomato sauce doesn't mean it's "NY Pizza". That's what you can't understand.

I can't understand it because it doesn't make any sense. How can restaurants make Ethiopian food of all things that is decent in DC, NYC, and LA but they only place in the world capable of making Chicago style pizza is Chicago? The same goes for NY pizza.

And PizzaPapalis is in Detroit and it most certainly IS the same as pizza that you get in Chicago. In fact it's better than most!

Actually, I have to be honest, I prefer the "Chicago Pizza" I've had outside of Chicago to the "Chicago Pizza" I had while in Chicago.

I have to agree with you in the general area. The best 2 pizza places on earth, IMHO, are Shield's Pizza and Buddy's Pizza (both in the Detroit area).

Detroit is a big pizza place with Little Caesars, Hungry Howie's, and Domino's all headquartered in the metro area.

You were right about the "Amish" in Sarasota, they are really Mennonites.

An example of bad LI pizza is "Borrelli's" by the Nassau Coliseum.

No one is saying they aren't making a "good pizza". It's just not "NY Pizza", regardless of what they call it. There IS a difference.
I am sure there are places that make it the same way, but most of the ones that say they are making "NY Pizza" aren't making it, it usually is more like mediocre "Long Island" pizza, or something that resembles "NY Pizza".
