It takes longer to create new jobs than to save existing ones. In fact the latter takes no time at all.

Many of the states are facing budget deficits, which are not allowed, and therefore existing jobs are threatened.

The obvious solution would be for the government to provide more aid directly to the states.

I have no confidence in the government's ability to create millions of "green" jobs any time soon; and I think need for more infrastructure has been exaggerated.

The entire idea of the stimulus was that these jobs would be created quickly and obviously they have not been. For example I'm not aware that any of the "shovel ready" transit/road construction jobs that were supposed to benefit from the stimulus have started yet. I have heard that a few will start this summer.

Problem is, Obama was adamant about pushing the Stimulus through fast to create jobs right away, save the economy, and prevent more job loss. Now people think he rushed it so people couldn't absorb how bad it might've been.

Well, the Fed dropping the fed fund rate to zero has done more in the short term than any infrastructure spending to prop up this ailing economy.Banks can get money at zero and loan it for 5%.Ford reports a better June and home sales are ticking up a bit.Certainly not as a result of your Obama's infrastructure spending plan! You say one year.Let's see how many "shovel ready" projects are working by then and how it helps the economy.Tick-tock,tick-tock.....

I know firsthand that it has saved and created jobs in engineering. The drop in construction jobs in the article is a little surprising but completely unexpected, as home construction probably employs more than highway construction.

Some have. "Shovel ready" meant projects that could be advertised within three months. It has been almost five months since ARRA passed, and a lot of projects are indeed out for bid now.

Not necessarily. In mid-2008 Orange County California presented voters with choices of shovel ready projects and went with the ones that the voters decided. Of course the list was light on auto/freeway related projects and heavy on BRT/Metrolink projects to ensure that at least some of the ones chosen would be mass transit.

The whole thing was rushed into. A lot of damage can happen in a year, in an already messy situation. Hopefully soon some responsibility can be taken. While the mess isn't his fault, how it's handled and dealt with certainly is, and that's something many are forgetting.

Well, the Fed dropping the fed fund rate to zero has done more in the short term than any infrastructure spending to prop up this ailing economy.

I do agree. Monetary policy is essential to the revival of the economy, and the Federal Reserve can act in the national interest, without having to seek the approval of Congress (with the attendant need to buy votes by pork barrel spending (earmarks)). The Federal Reserve can go beyond zero interest rates by buying more securities in the open market, and they don't even have to be Treasury bills. I think this is what is called "quantitative easing". When the Fed increases the money supply, it doesn't have to pick winners.

Fiscal policy also has its place, the essential ingredient being to run a budget deficit. That can be done by reducing taxes (Republican) or by increasing government spending (Democratic) or by some combination of the two.

I also think that each state should be allowed to run a budget deficit. As it is, the state of California cannot even meet its own payroll, and is having to issue IOUs. In Canada the provinces can and do issue bonds to allow them to run deficits.
