Since over a billion people around the world (contrary to popular belief the United States is NOT the only country in the world apathetic to "futbol") go nuts over the stuff, some to the point of violence, there has to be something I'm missing. I have yet to find out what. |

I can't even get past the sound of all the constant horn blowing in the stadium, but even without that, it just looks like a bunch of people running around for hours with little or no score. Boring as hell. |

I kinda like hockey though, although I agree, it's almost soccer on skates. Basketball is another sport that bores me. I like Football best, followed by baseball, then hockey. I can't get into basketball. I used to like tennis, but that was back in the early 90's, and I had a second cousin playing professionally there, and he often got us tickets for the US Open, and I got to know the players back then, and would watch. But He retired, and as the players I knew retired, I slowly lost interest.Soccer I find unwatchable, but golf is even more unwatchable in my opinion. |

With baseball, I only watch the Yanks or some really Important Games like in the World Series. With soccer I'll attend and watch HS and amateur league matches even though I have no idea who's who. I've even attended (oh the horror...) women's games. I wish my knees were still good enough to play just for the fun even if it's one of those Over-35 beer leagues. |

Will the runner steal? Will the manager go to the bullpen? Can this guy move the runner over? Drive him in? Get a lousy fucking hit? (for us Mets fans). Soccer is just a bunch of guys kicking a round ball around. Occasionally the opposing team will get a kick off near the goal. Usually said kick misses. Then, more kicking. Don't feel bad, hockey and lacrosse are just as boring. Basketball at least has fouls which lead to free throws. |

Millions of them watch the Super Bowl. Soccer usually has to appeal to patriotism and anti-Americanism whenever our football makes inroads (especially in Europe). Why do you think soccer is so obsessed with Americans rejecting their sport en masse? |

First off, there are ties (penalty shots are not an acceptable way to deal with ties). Secondly, playoff rankings are not set strictly with wins or losses, they use that stupid points system. And finally, it's too identified with Canada. The only good thing to come out of Canada is Colin Mochrie. Perhaps Tim Hortons, if it ever gets into NYC. |

I heard the horn blowing but at the time I had no idea it was horns. As I mentioned in the original post, it sounded like a swarm of bumblebees. To your other salient point, a "nil-nil" final score is considered to be an offensive explosion. Soccer needs to be banned in this country. |

I think that many of the people that watch American football in Europe are either Americans, friends of Americans, or have some connection to the US. There there are some converts, but they are less than soccer fans in the US and you know how small our numbers are.Why do you think soccer is so obsessed with Americans rejecting their sport en masse? It's not that. One one hand they are fascinated that we are one of the few countries almost totally uninterested in the world's most popular sport. OTOH they are worried that Americans will "discover" soccer and dominate the sport. |

Posted by cortelyounext on Wed Jul 1 17:51:47 2009, in response to Re: Futbol, posted by Fred G on Wed Jul 1 17:02:31 2009. Well, Fred G, notwithstanding my admiration for your photography and my respect for you as a posting legend, here are 10 larger reasons I do not:1. Players who go by one name, like Kaka or Sara. 2. Injury time. Totally arbitrary. 3. After the final whistle, no matter how insignificant the "Friendly" contest (whatever the hell that means), the players are required to remove their shirts and exchange them with players from the other team as some sort of memento to mediocrity. 4. Goal celebrations. The players fall and fawn over each other. 5. Referring to the field as the "pitch". 6. Players in "the wall" covering up their privates. Man up for goodness sake. 7. Players holding the hand of a child as they emerge from the tunnel onto the quote unquote pitch before the game. Actually, on second thought, that's pretty good. 8. Fake injuries whereby a player who is barely pushed from behind falls to the so called pitch as if he was shot, then writhes in agony. Then, the alleged trainers race onto the field with a piece of wood that is supposed to resemble a stretcher. Then, they lift the player onto this piece of wood and race off the pitch only to have said player fall off the piece of wood. Then, they put the player back onto the piece of wood and finally make it to the sideline. Then, the player struggles to his feet and begins running in place with eyes closed in obvious pain. Then, the player reenters the game 45 seconds later, still in anguish, until the moment the ball is in his area and there is a scoring opportunity at which time he is immediately back at full speed. 9. Nil - Nil is considered an offensive explosion. 10. Players who foul are required to apologize, offer their hand in a gesture of forgiveness, and gently stroke the face of the fouled player. 11. (Bonus to make up for #7) The requisite stampedes whereby fans are pushed up against the fence until it gives way at which point the fans are trampled to death. |

Baseball is less interesting in person because you don't have Vin Scully giving you interesting facts. That's why Dodgers fans arrive in the 3rd inning and leave in the 7th or 8th. |
