If Iraq is not better off, why did Obama point out how strong their economy is? They are better off.Of course we need to drill. China, Russia, etc are, and we need to as well. Yes, we need to do with less, but the "less" needs to come from us not other nations. Why do you hate drilling? Do you have contempt for people who have a car, and blame them for our dependency on foreign oil? Most people who rely on public transportation are like that. |

If they were better off, then explain why the country would fall apart after we leave...and terrorists would be the leasts of their worries. Cultural infighting would be my biggest concern. As for drilling, we don't need to drill. In fact, I agree with Bloomberg in that fuel prices are way too low by about 2 dollars at least. When people learn to adjust their lives, it will be hard for a few years, but it will be better in the long run for everyone. People will then think about what they absolutely need oil for. It isn't so much opposition to drilling as it is the fact that the USA needlessly wastes so much fuel. Also, there are easier to access areas with oil than ANWR, such as possibly the Southern Tier in western New York, which would be a LOT cheaper. |

I purchased a pellet stove to help heat my home this winter but lots of people can't afford the $3,000 to $5,000 cost plus pellet fuel costs. Lots of people also can't afford $4+/gallon heating fuel. Do you punish them? The prospect of the US approving Off Shore Drilling has forced OPEC to let the cost of oil settle back and has cut the nuts off of the speculators. We need it. It is the short trips where the US wastes the most fuel, like the drive to a supermarket that is less than 1/2 mile away just because one would be gambling with life just trying to walk it.As for heating costs, there are programs to help people afford that, which I am for. But the US should absolutely NOT be subsidizing on-highway fuel costs, because people on roads get subsidies, whereas railroads have to pay 100% of costs of maintaining their ROW (and in many cases, pay taxes on it too). Someone is getting a raw deal. The problem is that there are much more accessible places where oil may be...Western NY, anyone? (And to boot, that would provide a very depressed area with a much needed shot in the arm.) |

When people learn to adjust their lives, it will be hard for a few years, but it will be better in the long run for everyone. People will then think about what they absolutely need oil for.Have you completely forgotten about the other problems caused by rising oil prices? Such as...higher costs of EVERYTHING? Not to mention transit's costs keep rising, and it doesn't get more funding although it's packed with more people than it can handle at times. It's not just about people driving from point A to point B. Our economy relies on the oils - it's just up to us to find alternative sources, and hopefully sooner rather than later. Speaking of driving, not everyone lives near decent public transportation. There are rural areas, etc. Also, you can't necessarily get away without having access to a car in some professions - you just have to go to too many meetings and do too many things, etc. Drilling can't be the primary solution, however, because it would take time for us to see the effects. We need to continue to work towards alternative fuels, such as CNG, to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. In fact, the Honda Civic is available as a CNG vehicle! |
