That is what this election is going to be a referendum on: who can best lead the US through these bad domestic times...if it remains on this, advantage Obama. |

Just pointing out that Luch's observation about how close both candidates are sticking to their talking points works both ways. Sadly for McCain that means reinforcing his position as a two note song, harping away on spending and Iraq. It doesn't help that McCain is looking a bit like Nixon up there, trying desperately not to reach up and wipe his brow. |

Because that's the mark of good foreign policy: when you can't deal with some power you just walk away and form another body to do the same thing while excluding them. What the hell makes him think the other democracies will even go along with us? We're the goddamn ones who have simply ignored the UN's recommendations of late, China and Russia simply obstruct the process. Why the hell would France, Britain, Germany, or any other democracy worth its salt want to go form another body with a country that routinely ignores the recommendations of the body they're protesting? |

I believe nuclear power could provide a useful bulk power source without a carbon impact. I find it objectionable, but offshore drilling could provide a low cost privately financed alternative for the near term. However, that path can only be taken if we also look to develop long term alternatives.McCain may represent these ideas, but he comes with a ridiculous amount of baggage from Dubya's presidency. We cannot afford another four years of a president who waves away deficit spending for international entanglements with one hand while invoking spending cuts to justify slashing domestic services. Fundamentally our foreign policy is our energy policy, and our energy policy is our transportation policy. Only one candidate even momentarily touched on that issue tonight, and that's the candidate I will gladly support. |

Of course, the 2000 model year run of McCain was the one that managed to excellently sum up what I think much of this nation feels on extremists by saying:Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right. Then there must have been some foul up in the production run because the 2007 model ran out and kissed Falwell's ring so fast you'd think he was proposing to his hot wife after dumping his disfigured one. |

Not only does the USA not need to drill for more oil, the US needs to learn to do with less (and as Bloomberg said...sky high fuel costs are a good thing); the US is fighting the war in Iraq the wrong way, and Iraq is NOT better off than it was (it might be rid of terrorists, but the country isn't going to stay together at all after we leave because of other factors); and McCain does not have the proper plan to lead the US out of what has become a recession. |

So long as the economy remains at the top of priorities, McCain is going to be exposed. Extending the tax cuts would not be a wise idea...how would the US pay for the bailout? And the US is consuming WAY too much oil, and needs to learn to rely on their feet more and transit. |
