Will Anti-US Feelings Decline Once a Democrat is President?

Does anyone think that once the Bush administration is out in 2009 and is replaced by a Democratic one (probably headed by Hillary Clinton, whom I like), anti-American feelings abroad will decline, even slightly?

It's probably just a talking point. Jihad Mickey's feelings won't subside.

In Europe, almost certainly. There is an huge well of positive feelings towards the USA here, which Bush has been totally unable to tap. It would be good to have the 'free world' headed up by someone who actually believes in civil liberty, and not just hear the rhetoric of freedom used by a instinctive authoritarian.

However, the USA's religiosity will continue to be an obstacle.

I thank the Europeans for caring about my civil liberties to the point where if I no longer have any, I get blamed and yelled at from new anti-americans. But I don't believe it's the USA's religious "values" that's the problem from what I see a half a dozen times daily in various outlets.

'I thank the Europeans for caring about my civil liberties'

Well, I *am* concerned about your civil liberties, but I'm also concerned about mine. I don't think Americans always realise the extent to which, from the perspective of another continent, it simply looks as if America wants to own the world, and rule it according to America's ideas and culture. True freedom must include the right to be different from you - just as I respect your right to be different from us. The American Revolution in 1776 was utterly justified, but now we need a British Revolution so that *we* can gain our independence from the USA, just as you gained your independence from us 230 years ago.

However, the USA's religiosity will continue to be an obstacle.

What are the symptoms of this "USA religiosity"?

If they are things like the US trying to block the deployment of birth control to third world countries, this is not US religiosity. This is religiosity of the 10% of voters who are nut jobs and have been convinced that the Republican Party is their salvation. They will have less influence under a Democratic president.

Or are you thinking of other phenomena?

I think the continent, and Londonistian should also look east at the caliphate and also to China if one is so worried about anyone owning the world. So many people are preoccupied with very old ideals about American Empire, that they won't see the other two behind them.

It'll always be someone trying I suppose.

Global Warming, stem cells, and evolution.

Basically it's a window for Europe and Asia, and Israel to kick us while we're down and strip the rest of our innovation away, and take the lead.

Even though I singled out Israel instead of naming the region, the president of Iran and a lot of scholars like to boost about their innovation. Apparently they cured AIDS.

Those living in Anbar province are thankful. As are the Kurds. These people are enjoying their first real era of peace and relative security in generations. Yet the MSM still manages to find some armchair experts who cannot admit that Iraq, though still a mess, is better than it was under Saddam, even better than it was last year.

The mullahs ARE a factor, especially in Anbar, where they've switched from fighting Americans to co-operating with them. Are they doing so because we've won them over? No. But the media could at least trumpet ONE rather undeniable success in Iraq for once, without any "ifs" or "buts".

Yes, Anbar. Perhaps you've not been paying attention. The idiots who we were fighting there just last year have now switched sides and are co-operating with American troops. Big, bad Anbar, the part of Iraq the nay-sayers said was lost forever.

First sentence, dead on. The rest, not so much.

And frankly, the rising right wing in all of Europe (not just Germany) is staunchly Catholic. (Yes, that's what I said.)

Well, then you don't have to worry about Germany. West Germany was something like 40% Catholic, but the east is so overwhelmingly Protestant that there is no risk of a heavily Catholic movement becoming a majority in Germany.

And by the way except for Poland and the Czech Republic the former Soviet block is hardly Catholic at all.

You are mistaken if you think that Germany's going to be like Northern Ireland. You haven't heard about the shift towards Catholicism away from Protestantism, due to the Protestants being too liberal?

To hear Benedict XVI talk, they'd all be Catholic. He's all about healing the schism between himself and Orthodoxy, remember?
