Penmanship used to be a graded subject in grammar school in the 50s. I always got crappy grades because I'm left handed, but my handwriting at least has always been legible even though ugly.I hardly ever see cursive writing any more. I agree that it's gotten worse among those who still do it. Probably because it isn't taught any more. I often use a mixture of printing and writing on the few occasions I write a note to someone. But writing is much quicker than printing, so if I need to write a note to myself I will probably write it. |

I've never used the term bathroom tissue in my life. Don't know anyone who does. George was a decent comedian, classic NYC liberal. Of course, he had to throw the "white people" comment in there. |

Penmanship used to be a graded subject in grammar school in the 50s. I always got crappy grades because I'm left handed, but my handwriting at least has always been legible even though ugly.It was graded in the 90s too. There's a difference though between ugly and illegible. I hardly ever see cursive writing any more. I agree that it's gotten worse among those who still do it. Probably because it isn't taught any more. If it's not taught anymore, then how do people know how to write with it, poorly? I was never taught to write Chinese so I don't. But writing is much quicker than printing, so if I need to write a note to myself I will probably write it. This isn't true for everyone. I was taught cursive in school and it always took longer and was more tedious than printing, probably because I learned to print when I was 5 but they only starting teaching cursive in the 3rd grade, so it was "extraneous." I therefore always printed faster than I could write, so when teachers stopped forcing students to write in script in the 6th grade, I stopped and never went back. Maybe it's only faster for some people because they don't do it well enough to be legible. |

I have come to think of grammar school as a 1-8 catholic school. Or K-8. Public schools use elementary fro prek-5.Middle School is most common now in nyc. There could be some junior high schools and some Intermediate Schools. |

Many Years ago I remember when you went to the doctor to get well you got a handwritten prescription. I could never understand what was written down, but the pharmacist never seemed to have a problem understanding it. My parents told me that it was written in Latin and the amount of medicine called for was written in Roman Numerals that Pharmacists had to know. Worked for me back when I was an impressionable (gullable) kid. |

I don't believe I ever got a grade in it. I am angry that school was lazy and didn't really give us proper practice. or maybe it was homework, I don't know. But no one writes liek they did in the 1910's.My writing has gotten worse because I don't write much anymore. I am trying to get back into it, and it's amazing how weak the hands and penmanship gets. Getting better though. But it's like psychical therapy to try to write even badly now. Print or script. |

My grades 1-6 schools (we moved) were always referred to as grammar schools, though I don't think that was an official term.I looked up my grades 7-9 school, then called a JHS. Now it covers grades 6-8 and is called a Middle School. |

My brother-in-law got kicked out of Our Lady of Mercy elementary school in Park Ridge, New Jersey because of poor penmanship. You hear what I'm telling you? He was not held back, he was kicked out. I am not making that up. He ended up going into the tranfer portal and was picked up by West Ridge elementary on the other side of town and he learned to write. I still cannot understand it neither can my sister who is his wife. The whole thing makes no sense. |

Well then, Carlin got it wrong. He claimed "shell shock" was the WWI term and "battle fatigue" the WWII term, replaced with "operational exhaustion" during the Korean War and "post-traumatic stress disorder" during the Vietnam War. |

I found cursive to be more relaxing for the hand, not having to lift the pen (however minimally) off the page so much. If we were writing more letters than e-mails nowadays, I'd probably default to cursive most of the time for that reason, but I'd make sure it's legible. But on the occasion that I do write out an addressee on an envelope for snail-mail or need to make an official written entry to a manual register of some kind, I print - just to be absolutely sure there's no ambiguity. And now for basically all post-it notes or short memos in the office I'm pretty much always printing, but not because it's easier for me - rather I just don't want to deal with even the smallest possibility of a misread word. OTOH for all hand-written cards (holiday, thank-you, get-well, etc.) I always write in cursive and find it easier. |

It never made sense to me to have a single teacher for all subjects in 7th and 8th grades. Math, english, science, social studies, and maybe even a language at 7th grade level is too much for one teacher too handle competently. |

I think in most K-8 Catholic schools nowadays each teacher has their own classroom but starting either 4th or 5th grades, the kids move around each class period so that the upper-grades' teachers can focus on their specialty subject. |

Recently I happened to have encountered this image in the daily menu of the Brighton Beach Hotel. The legibility here is not awesome, IMHO. I have relatives who attended high school in the early 1960s whose penmanship is far better. Is what you've been seeing much worse than this?![]() |

I agree.Among other things, for the number 1 I just draw a vertical line. It can technically be confused with a lowercase L but usually the context is obvious. To me the 1s they have in the given illustration look too much like rotated 7s or incomplete 4s. Since my 1 is a mere vertical line I never felt the need to draw that extra horizontal line through my 7s to differentiate. And my 4s are always open on top. |
