Lindsey Graham dies suddenly

Posted by Olog-hai on Sun Jul 12 02:40:30 2026

NBC News

Sen. Lindsey Graham dies at 71 after ‘brief and sudden illness’

Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who was elected to the Senate in 2003 and was a close political ally of President Donald Trump, has died, his office confirmed early Sunday. He was 71.

Graham died Saturday night “from a brief and sudden illness,” his office said in a statement.

“Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement continued.

Graham was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and was seeking a fifth six-year Senate term in November. He was one of the most well-known members of the chamber and a key voice within the party on defense and international affairs.

Emergency personnel responded to a call for “cardiac arrest” at Graham’s Capitol Hill home on Saturday night, according to police scanner audio obtained by NBC News.

Photographs reviewed by NBC News show that paramedics carried a person on a stretcher from Graham’s home to an awaiting ambulance. Police cars and fire trucks were also on site.

Graham was fresh off a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

His death comes as fellow Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell remains in the hospital after paramedics responded to a call at a known residence last month for an individual experiencing cardiac arrest.

A McConnell spokesperson has said the former GOP majority leader is continuing to recover, but his team has not provided further details about his condition.

Packing the Supreme Court could happen.

How would it be a one party state? Abolishing primaries will make candidates more moderate and elections more competitive, not less.

I would like to see a non-partisan form of court packing.

Current justices retain their lifetime appointments. Going forward, on January 21 of each odd year, the president gets to nominate a justice for an 18 year term. The number of justices may fluctuate a bit but will never go down to zero.

Liberals had a 30 year run of good luck starting with FDR and ending with the appointment of Thurgood Marshall by LBJ, making the court way more liberal than the country as a whole. Conservatives have now had a 60 year run of luck making making the court way more conservative than the country as a whole. This has been bad for the country in both directions.

IAWTP.

Biden had a proposal similar to this, with only the 8 most junior associate justices hearing appellate cases (which is most of them). Any other justice would be on “senior status” and would only hear original jurisdiction cases, or would be assigned to hear a case in the event of a recusal.

In the event of death, resignation, or removal from office of a justice on senior status, no appointment would be made.

That’s your fantasy.

If Republicans stop being the rural party, they could be more competitive in cities. Packing the union wouldn’t create a one party state, but it would help get rid of the government’s rural bias.

What is uncouth or classless about mentioning the probable cause of death?

He had undetected heart disease. For someone with advanced hardened arteries, time in a plane with its variable air pressure can readily create an embolism which can tear the aorta. It’s rare, but not unknown.

It’s a tragedy that he either didn’t pursue or didn’t receive the medical attention he apparently needed.

An EKG would have made absolutely no difference. It cannot detect a potential aortic dissection.

Granted but a person his age, as part of a routine checkup with a cardiologist, would have an ECHO EKG ordered which would pick up a defective aorta. This happened to my father and he had his aorta replaced.

My original point is our legislators can get every test in the book to stay healthy, and why wouldn't they?.......And have zero co-payments or out of pocket expenses not covered by insurance like what happens to us peasants.

Scans expose people to radiation, so they’re not done on a whim, even if the person could pay for it.

And as for your characterization of their medical coverage, it isn’t true. Aren’t you a union retiree? You would have excellent medical coverage. Members of Congress have to buy their insurance through Obamacare.

Yeah. Union retiree where TWU allowed management to put us all into a managed care plan and took away regular Medicare 3 years ago. Us retirees were no allowed to vote on the contract, that was part of the total package along with everything else. The actives voted yes because that change did not affect them.

It didn't matter to me because I'm in a managed plan anyway, but others who didn't want it were stuck with it and had to change over. Many of them lost their doctors. Our plan for example does not allow us to get cancer treatment at Sloan-Kettering, where my wife went about 25 years ago while I was active.

My observation is that the two seem to be used interchangeably. I always thought the same, EKG was the electronic test/monitoring, echocardiogram (ECG) was the ultrasound test.

Maybe they do this to confuse the patients, then sit around their break rooms and have a laugh at our expense.

I asked ChatGPT:

Yes, but with an important caveat that often gets lost in political discussions.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA, often called “Obamacare”) requires most Members of Congress and many congressional staff to obtain their health insurance through the ACA marketplace established for the District of Columbia, called DC Health Link. This provision was added during the ACA’s passage to ensure that Congress would not be exempt from the system it created.

However, a few points are frequently misunderstood:

* They do not simply buy an individual Obamacare plan like an ordinary consumer. Members and eligible staff enroll through the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) on DC Health Link as employees of the federal government.
* The federal government continues to contribute toward their premiums as an employer, just as it does for many other federal employees. After the ACA was enacted, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management issued regulations allowing Congress to retain its employer contribution while purchasing coverage through the exchange.
* Their insurance is generally quite comprehensive, but that is because of the plans offered and the employer contribution—not because they have some secret, separate congressional health system.

Another common misconception is that members of Congress have free health care. They do not. They pay premiums, deductibles, copays, and other out-of-pocket costs, although the government’s employer contribution substantially reduces their premium costs, much as it does for many private-sector employees with employer-sponsored insurance.

So if someone says “Congress is on Obamacare,” that’s partly true:

* They do obtain coverage through an ACA exchange.
* But they do so as employees with an employer contribution, not as ordinary individual marketplace purchasers receiving the same type of arrangements as every other consumer.

This distinction is often omitted in political debates, leading people on both sides to oversimplify how congressional health insurance actually works.
