The mayor is apparently considering eliminating free parking in NYC

Posted by TRAIN DUDE on Wed Mar 11 21:49:53 2026

LOL, All the assholes in the city who voted for the goat-fucker are about to get a taste of mayor goat-fucker's free stuff. Brace yourselves as you are about to get goat fucked:

New York Post
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration will be considering converting the city’s free on-street parking areas to metered parking as the Big Apple grapples with a $5.4 billion budget gap fueled by Hizzoner’s socialist programs.

First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan said last week that the controversial policy proposal “needs to be discussed” when asked whether charging for currently free parking or instituting “dynamic pricing” that changes according to demand could help close the shortfall.

He can discuss it all he wants with the Queens City Council people, to which he'll get a resounding NO.

Should this lame brained idea come to pass, it would be virtually impossible to sell ones house.

Should buy stock in every possible system that runs on-street meter apps. They charge a fee everytime I park.

Or will NYC create its own for lots of money, and it won't work?

Think about also taxing driveways in woodhaven, ridgewood and maspeth. All that untapped potential revenue.

I am mildly amused by seeing governmental flailing by this fool. Now that the first government run grocery store failure exceeded my wildest expectations, thems who elected this fool of a mayor may now be starting to question their wasted votes.

You know, this is actually a good idea. It would be a huge F-U to the outer boroughs, so I'm personally against it, but charging for services is a good idea. Free parking has numerous negative externalities that people who don't benefit from it pay for.

The problem is that, as Bill alludes to, the value of the free parking is priced into home prices and rents in various places, so this would be a taking from millions of people. But those people didn't vote for Comrade Zohran.

In general, the problem with new fees, no matter how justified they are, is the economic disruption they cause.

The people of the City of New York own the streets. Why can't they get paid for renting them out? And the answer is just what you alluded to. Completely unexpected destruction of economic value.

Very similar to the issue with tariffs.

I'm not sure what there is to expand? The parked cars take up space and obstruct traffic. There's also competition for spaces, which paradoxically makes people want to keep the car there longer than they have to.

I forgot he did that. I thought all he did was open an already built bathroom and have pallywood daily videos.

Not speaking for Spider-Pig but people unknown to you are basically allowed to hang out directly in front of your house and/or store their personal stuff there, all because a car is involved. You also have little to no say about what they're doing in the car. If the spot in front of your house was empty and someone just came along and sat down on the street there all day, smoking whatever and with hundreds of pounds of mysterious baggage surrounding them, and left that stuff lying around from time to time, would this be ok? (Bonus points for bumper stickers advertising stuff you don't like taped down to the street).

From an experiential standpoint, there's a reason why the first step to a block party is getting rid of the cars, and there's a reason why some neighborhoods just straight out ban street parking for their summer (or at least peak) times.

What are you supposed to do with the car then? Illegally parked cars can obstruct traffic but how does a properly parked car obstruct traffic?

Nobody is parking in front of my house but I see what you mean.
I know all about summer parking as well.

Double-parking exists because there aren’t enough spots. It’s similar to my arguments in favor of so-called “price gouging.” If the double-parker needs the spot badly enough he’ll pay for it, but it’s possible that one or more of the single-parkers will choose not to drive there and make room for someone for whom parking there is more valuable.

Note that double-parkers already take the risk of a parking ticket, so that’s the “price” right there. Some businesses expect parking tickets and pay them regularly.
