Gasoline taxes don't pay for all highway building and maintenance expenses. The gasoline taxes used to pay only for building costs. They don't even cover that now. There has to be some mechanism for paying for maintenance and possible replacement costs. Increased gas mileage and the switch to electric and hybrid vehicles has reduced gasoline tax revenue, while vehicle mileage has increased. In most cases the shortfall has been made up through general revenue. The decreased gasoline tax revenue has placed a greater burden on local taxes. This burden has been met by inadequate maintenance, resulting in bad roads. Some alternative is required to replace the this shortfall. A weight and mileage based tax is would roughly apportion the tax according to the damage the vehicle causes. Finding a cost effective way to collect the tax is a problem. The Oregon tax costs 10% to administer. |

Will they get rid of gasoline taxes and charge for the actual cost? Or is this just another thing in addition to that thing, until people start losing count of all of the ways they tax and pay for a single thing?Just like Medicaid does. |

The Oregon tax costs 10% to administer. The state of California levies the heights motor fuel tax in the United States. That is one of the reason why the price of motor fuel in California is more then twice what it is the majority of the other states. The new tax is being levied to aid in the paying down California's more then $1 trillion in debt. Revenues from the tax if used only to pay off debt would do it in 10 years. It is also being levied to tax electric vehicles that do not pay motor fuel tax at all. I would not be surprised that some of the revenue will be siphoned off to pay for the over priced high speed rail to nowhere. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

EV's using all of that tax free electricity....It is taxed at charging station like in other states, however I do not know if it taxed equally to motor fuel. Charging at home is taxed at residential tax rate, which higher then is in other states, price per kilowatt hour in California is also higher the it is in most other states. Gas tax isn't tied to inflation. For....30 years? I've been hearing how the gas tax hasn't kept up.Where I live just increased it. grassroots concerned citizens wrote letters in support of gas tax increases. Oddly enough, the letters were word for word exactly the same as in every other state that has increased gas taxes in the last 10 years at least. Gas taxes is a scam. Abolish the crap. |

Gas tax isn't tied to inflation. For....30 years? I've been hearing how the gas tax hasn't kept up.Where I live just increased it. The federal gasoline tax was set at 18.4 cents per gallon (24.4 cents for diesel) in 1993. It has not changed since then. |

Good. All we need is to increase it so people will complain more about money going to sidewalks and trains when the tax comes from gassers. |
