The NYC ballot

Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Tue Nov 4 04:36:30 2025

"1. No ID required
2. Zohran on the ballot twice in the top row
3. Eric Adams, who dropped out to avoid splitting the vote, still on the ballot
4. Cuomo in the bottom right corner, 2nd row"

I saw a picture of this that verified such, wow is that city full of losers. Who came up with this?

1. No ID required
Person must sign in. Signature is matched to what is on file. ID's, including photo ID's can be easily forged.

2. Zohran on the ballot twice in the top row
3. Eric Adams, who dropped out to avoid splitting the vote, still on the ballot
4. Cuomo in the bottom right corner, 2nd row"

Placement on ballot is dictated by state law. The official parties, those that received more than 50,000 votes in last gubernatorial election, appear in order of their vote total. The 4 official parties in order of their vote totals in 2022 are: Democratic, Republican, Conservative and Working Families.

Mamdani is the nominee of the Democratic and Working Families parties.

There is a deadline for removal from a ballot. Adams withdrawal came after this deadline. Thus, his name still appears on the ballot.

Cadidates who appear as a result of nominating petitions are placed in the order in which such petitions are received. Cuomo dithered, while Sliwa and Adams went right to work to secure a sufficient number of valid signatures on their petitions.

There's a limited amount of space on the paper ballot, which has size restrictions so that it can be read by mark sense readers. There are 9 candidates plus a space for a write-in for mayor. They could not all fit on a single line and still be legible. Thus, more than a single line must be used, when the single line threshold is exceeded.

What ever the outcome, ballot composition was according to established rules.

I cannot take credit, but the country learned something about the unique nature of NYC today.

"Lesson learned: if you run for office in New York, form a NGO to collect the signatures needed to establish as many political parties as you can, and register yourself as a member of each one. The ballot should be 10 pages long and people have to hunt for your opponent."

1. No, it isn't. The signature used to be in a book but is now on a tablet. I have never accurately signed my name on a touchscreen, even with a stylus. I am certain that when I signed to vote on Sunday it did not resemble the signature that I registered with years ago.

I don't think that requiring ID to vote would be a major burden and I now support it because signature matching is bullshit.

I agree with the rest of your post and this discourse about the ballot is ridiculous. Electoral fusion is cool and it used to be more common.

To add:

I wasn't previously aware of this, but beginning in 2020, elections for electors for president and vice president of the United States count for the purpose of determining automatic ballot access, in additional to gubernatorial elections. They also increased the threshold from 50,000 to 130,000 or 2% of the total number of ballots cast, whichever is greater.

Thus, those are the 4 parties that met the threshold during the 2024 election, not the last gubernatorial election.

I don't think that requiring ID to vote would be a major burden

1. It would be unconstitutional, unless such a required ID were freely and universally available. If there were a charge, like a driver's license or equivalent ID from DMV/s, it would constitute a poll tax. Any payments as a voting requirement were repealed by the 24th Amendment to wit:

The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay poll tax or other tax.

The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

2. Unlike many countries, the United States does not require people to carry an identity card. Most civil libertarians view the lack of such requirement as a basic liberty. If a voter ID card were required and the lack of identity card carrying were to be simultaneously maintained, then the voter ID could not be used for any purpose other than voting.

There is a precedent. Every US male citizen over 18 was required to carry Selective Service registration and classification cards. By law, these cards could not be used to establish identification with any other agency.

Thanks for the update.

The change was initiated by then Governor Andrew Cuomo, to kill minority parties. The Working Families party was his main target.

1. The states that have implemented voter ID have made non-driver IDs available free of charge.

Also, if you'll note the text of the 24th amendment, it only applies to elections for federal offices. Polls taxes for all other elections were held to be unconstitutional by Harper v. Virginia State Board of Elections, 383 U.S. 663, 86 S. Ct. 1079 (1966).

2. The vast majority of people already carry some sort of ID card. Since elections are not a daily event, one would still not need to carry any ID most of the time. I don't understand how you would say that the "voter ID" would not be used for any other purpose. No state requiring ID to vote actually issues a dedicated "voter ID." State IDs are already used for many purposes.

Being an adult and not having a proper ID is already so rare that any stories about not having IDs are extremely anecdotal.

If I need to show my ID to get Sudafed at Walgreens, you need to show your ID to vote.

If Florida and Texas can count and report vote totals the night of, so can every single other place.

Cuomo is in ballot Siberia because he lost the primary. Remember that? You don't give top billing to the bit player.

Florida can report vote totals the night of because they're allowed to pre-count the mail-in votes. In Pennsylvania the Republicans specifically opposed allowing this.
