An actual example of New York incompetence

Posted by Spider-Pig on Tue Sep 2 11:42:30 2025

Why didn’t the city do anything for the 400th anniversary?

If Robert Moses were still around, he would have had another World’s Fair or something.

Highly unlikely if we'll ever see another Worlds Fair in NYC again.
The 64-65 WF was a monumental money loser. $$$ talks.
As for Robert Moses, there will never be another one like him & most New Yorkers with long memories will not shed any tears about that.

I agree with that we won’t have another Wod Fir, not just here but anywhere else in the USA.

But my point was that the city just did fuck all for its 400th anniversary, which is sad.

They might have ignored it because it’s the 400th anniversary of the establishment of a colony and that’s now considered evil.

I disagree with you about Moses.

It’s like a country road compared to that damn Van Wyck. The difference is that the CBX can come to a massive standstill at times but it has plenty of times when it’s ok. The Van Wyck is only ok in the middle of the night or early Sunday morning. Saturday morning is no guarantee.

Right now at 1305 hours the CBX northbound is open and clear from the GW to the Bruckner. Southbound is another story.
The Van Wyck is a disaster north and south bound from the airport to Main Street.

Figures.

What I don’t get about all this criticism is: what do people expect out of the Cross Bronx. Would they think it would be better to use Tremont Avenue if it were never built?

If you want an example of that, compare the Cross Bronx to the Cross Brooklyn, or rather the alternative routes one is stuck with because there isn’t a Cross Brooklyn.

Again, it all depends where you are coming from. Maybe about 1% of my trips through the Bronx have ever involved the Cross Bronx.

I realize your situation could very well be different.

Still, if I were in the east Bronx and needed to get to NJ, I would be very strongly tempted to take the Hutch to the Cross County to the Saw Mill to the GWB.

Those would be "easy" miles as opposed to the stop & go (sometimes dead stop) going westbound. Rough on your engine drive train and gas mileage, and god help you if you're driving stick. Lest we forget those tractor trailers who will cut you off in a heartbeat while surrounding you with their exhaust. All that avoided by the Hutch & Saw Mill

NYC survived w/o a Cross Brooklyn & Cross Manhattan expressways Somehow civilization as we know it would not have come to a grinding halt if the CBX wasn't built.

What I dont get is that most of the crew that posts here are advocates/ fans/foameers etc. of mass transit and rail projects, and find it hard to criticize Robert Moses for consistently favoring roads over rails. Sure hes made many contributions to the quality of life in NYC, but simply put he got too much power and had to be taken down. There are many books out there that document the rise and fall of the great Robert Moses.

The city would have been poorer without the cross-bronx and other highways.

It’s not an either/or proposition. What I don’t like about Moses is that he didn’t build the LIE and Van Wyck with medians for transit like in Chicago. Moses did a lot of great things even if his attitude towards mass transit left much to be desired.
