Airplane Landing in Severe Winds |
|
Posted by cortelyounext on Thu Aug 14 10:25:57 2025 Here is footage from yesterday or whatever day it was out there of a UPS 747-8 freighter attempting to land in strong, gusty crosswinds in Taiwan I meant to write Taiwan Province or Chinese Taipei. Whenever the pilots tell me the winds during landing are going to be quote strong close quote I get scared and sometimes begin to tremble although I try not to show it. I just sit there strapped into my little jump seat by 1L, totally defenseless, staring straight ahead into the bulkhead wall and oblivion. The hell was I thinking when I chose this career path? Anyone?Fly UPS Jets |

I had a rough landing on a flight earlier this week. I can't decide if being seated in a row with no window (not a purposeful choice) made the experience better or worse. |

I meant to write Taiwan ProvinceI wouldn't mean that. How come "samchui" first says "engine pod" and then further down uses the proper term "nacelle"? And how come the pilot didn't do a go-around? |

"And how come the pilot didn't do a go-around?"This explains why my packages from UPS arrive versus amazon who asks me for a loan or fedex which is pure luck. |

They'd still arrive with a go-around. And you won't have to pay later for the engine nacelle damage, which would be lower cost than the extra fuel required for the go-around. |

That is nothing unusual is a standard cross wind landing. Even a pilot of a Cessna 172 is taught the Crab or the Slip (side-slip) methods of landing in a crosswind.Crabbing or crab method aligns the aircraft nose with the wind direction to maintain runway alignment. The slip method uses aileron and rudder to keep the plane tracking straight while banking into the wind. In that video the pilot is transitioning from a crab to a slip just before touchdown to align the plane with the runway centerline and reduce the load on the landing gear. There are hundreds of videos on the internet of this. True sitting upfront is a lot more scary than in the back. Cross wind speed has to be in the published tolerance for the aircraft and if it becomes unstable at anytime you can always go around. Now that is fun when they hit the TOGA button twice no matter where you are sitting... |

Under Pete, the airline industry almost collapsed. Delays, rampant unregulated mismanagement under his watch would qualify to make him the worst sect of transportation ever. Just ask any frequent flyer. |

The airline industry did not collapse under Buttigieg’s leadership. While there were significant disruptions (Southwest’s scheduling crisis in 2022, Delta’s IT meltdown in 2024), these were largely airline-specific or technological issues, not systemic failures caused by the Department of Transportation. In fact, the DOT under Buttigieg actively pursued consumer protections, enforcement actions, and penalties, and achieved some of the best cancellation rates in years. The evidence suggests that the overall handling of the industry was focused on reform and regulation—not neglect or collapse. So, in short: No—this claim doesn’t reflect the facts. The airline industry faced challenges during Buttigieg’s tenure, but it did not collapse, and many concrete steps were taken to improve airline accountability and protect consumers. —ChatGPT. |

It is a switch on the center control panel stands for Take Off Go Around. For Boeing a pilot presses TOGA the plane starts several actions to immediately configure for take off or go around. This would be a go around so Auto Throttle to predetermined go around thrust, if pressed twice then auto throttle will set max thrust. Flight Director direct pitch up to initiate climb with pitch and roll guidance to maintain safe climb Nav Mode will switch to missed approach procedure, and prevent autopilot from following the ILS glide slope. This will differ slightly based on manufacture and plane type |
