I really had to laugh when I saw that picture and caption OB. It has to be hard to be a DemocRAT these days as they have to depend on total screwup by our party in order for those incompetent boobs to get their hands on the workings of our government. We cannot let that happen.

No it doesn't but I think he went way out on the liberal line in trying to build a bridge with people who don't anything to do with that bridge except to blow it up. Robert Prevost is our new successor to Simon Peter and right now all Catholics should be proud that we have our first American Holy Father. Hope people of all faiths can share in our pride and happiness over this event.

Mitch, for what it is worth a couple of TV outlets said that Pope Robert was a registered Republican, though with a slight progressive bent. What that means I can only guess.

Yeah, used to be a pretty large minority. Something like 40%. Most have since emigrated elsewhere. Keep in mind that biblical places such as Bethlehem and Nazareth are in the West Bank.

Not every anti-Israel sentiment is inherently anti-Semitic (though many are). Pope Francis was very consistent in what he wanted to see in the Middle East (and elsewhere).

Now if you want to discuss a pope who was probably anti-Semitic and certainly no friend to the Jews, there's Pope Pius XII. He did far less than he probably could have (if anything at all) to protect European Jewry, as most of what he did was apparently behind the scenes. In 1938, he referred to Jews "whose lips curse [Christ] and whose hearts reject him even today" in a speech in Hungary. In 1955, Pius reintroduced kneeling for a Good Friday prayer to "pray for faithless Jews." In 1960, after WWII, Pius appears to have encouraged Catholics who helped save Jewish children by baptizing them to not return these children to their families, if their families had survived the war.

It seems as time has gone on, there is more coming out about Pius trying to do some things behind the scenes so to speak to save Jews. Was it enough? I'd argue no, but I also understand the constraints the Lateran Treaty placed on the Vatican. With that treaty being signed 7 years after the rise of Mussolini, only 4 years before the rise of Nazism, and 10 years before the start of WWII, the requirement that the Vatican remain "neutral" in foreign affairs probably played a role in what the pope felt he could do.

I'm not aware of any evidence suggesting he was complicit with the Nazis, are you?
