It seems as time has gone on, there is more coming out about Pius trying to do some things behind the scenes so to speak to save Jews. Was it enough? I'd argue no, but I also understand the constraints the Lateran Treaty placed on the Vatican. With that treaty being signed 7 years after the rise of Mussolini, only 4 years before the rise of Nazism, and 10 years before the start of WWII, the requirement that the Vatican remain "neutral" in foreign affairs probably played a role in what the pope felt he could do.I'm not aware of any evidence suggesting he was complicit with the Nazis, are you? |
