Hard times for yet another iconic NYC business |
|
Posted by Peter Rosa on Tue May 6 17:26:53 2025 This time it’s Jet Blue. Founded in the city about 25 years ago, headquarters in Long Island City, main base of operations at JFK airport. As about a tried-and-true New Yorker as you can get.Except it’s not all sweetness and light for Jet Blue. To start with, management has been mulling over moving the HQ from Queens to Orlando. I don’t know how many jobs might be involved but it’s not as if NYC can afford to lose any. And Orlando already has a thriving economy, which is about to get a huge boost when Epic Universe opens later this month. Moving or not, the fact remains that Jet Blue is struggling mightily. It has lost money in seven of the last nine quarters despite major route cuts. In fact, a new route from Islip to Boston got the axe before flights even began! Federal courts rejected a merger with Spirit Airlines and an alliance with American Airlines. Jet Blue’s latest hope is a partnership/alliance/whatever with United Airlines. It’s not clear what it would entail or whether it will happen at all. Even if it does, it’s sure to dilute Jet Blue’s NYC character as United is a Chicago company through and through. Yes, it has a major operation at Newark Airport, but that’s in New Jersey and New Jersey doesn’t count. As bad as all this may be, Jet Blue’s woes have gotten even worse. Thanks to the huge construction project/union enrichment program at JFK passengers using the Jet Blue terminal seeking ride shares will have to take the AirTrain (when it’s running) to Howard Beach. That’s sure to cause many to use other airlines. Mark my word: I believe Jet Blue will be in the airline graveyard sooner than later. |

Orlando is their training base for both flight deck, cabin, and management. They even have their own hotel that employees stay during initial and recurrent training.LIC is mostly back office and higher level customer service that isn't outsourced. JetBlue isn't what it was when it started. I love the flight crews but customer service and the experience before and after the flight has worsened over the years. Family in Florida and for 8 years near Buffalo and their credit card use during the pandemic I have 6 figure in points that I'm trying to burn and move on from them. Anyway the deal with United and we will see B6 probably disappear but that is another post. |

United is a Chicago company through and through. Here's hoping it stays that way but the land grab in Denver and the fact that any relocation is not "imminent" might well dash said hopes. The downtown Denver Flight Training Center went through a massive refurbishing/upgrade not that long ago yet the plan is to build a new facility over on the newly acquired property out by the airport. Then again, United recently picked up even more gates at O'Hare and is a huge economic engine for the city. cortelyounext, CU Boulder, (he/zir/them) |

They have more flexibility than the "legacy" airlines that are around only because of bailouts and government-sanctioned mergers. Don't run and hide if they bounce back from this.BTW, United "Chicago through and through"?? It was founded by William Boeing, and their original headquarters as "United Aircraft and Transport Corporation" was in Hartford CT (which is where spinoff company United Aircraft Corporation/United Technologies still has its headquarters). The airline settled in Chicago in 1934, five years after its founding and eight years after the founding of predecessor Varney Airlines (no vampire jokes please). |
