If some people need to wear masks for personal protection because of ill health, then the trend should be for more older people to wear them as ceteris paribus older people are in poorer health. Because mask wearing isn’t a health issue, it’s a superstition. That thing is the Gen Z equivalent of the lucky rabbit’s foot.

Because mask wearing isn’t a health issue, it’s a superstition. There are far, far more people than you think, even of younger ages, for whom it's a health issue.

It’s not. Younger people just learned that masks are something to be worn in public.

The health issues are heavily but far from exclusively among older people. No doubt some younger people are wearing masks who are at very low risk. Maybe some of that is political. Some of it may also be having an infirm person at home. Even I, at age 73, wear a mask more diligently in public places just because my wife is at greater risk than I am.

Not even many east Asians. I regularly watch videos by the world's most adorable food delivery driver, who makes deliveries in and around Los Angeles, and restaurant workers are quite often masked. It's especially common in Asian restaurants.
