Crime in the streets had always been here. What HAS changed is the fudging of crime stats, classifications being changed, the willful nonenforcement of non-felony crimes, etc...Mayors like Giuliani and Bloomberg, with Old School Police leadership, a la Bratton and Kelly, were able to keep violent crimes down enough that it never made the news. Wilhelm single-handedly destroyed all that progress, because enforcing the law and expecting people to behave is "racizms". Adams tries to straddle the fence, but ultimately is owned by his overlords, who share the "progressive democratic worldview where crime is part of life, criminals have rights, police and courts are villafied, etc... |

The air in NYC is way better than it used to be.- First they banned coal heating. - Then they banned #6 and #4 fuel oil. - More buses are not diesel. - Cars have far fewer emissions than they used to. Getting lead out of gasoline was a massive health improvement, but the particulates are greatly reduced too. - NJ has cleaned up its act a fair amount. For example, the Linden refinery on the NJ Turnpike smells way less bad than it used to. In the 1970s I lived in Renton WA, south of Seattle, for a few years. I have never experienced such eye-irritating air in NYC as I experienced there. Living with lots of cars and high mountains to your east is way worse than NYC. |

Less we forget that just about every apt. house had an incinerator to burn the tenants garbage. Municipal incinerators were in use also.Growing up in Woodside, the Van Iderside (sp) fat rendering plant located on the Newtown Creek in Greenpoint would stink out the entire neighborhood if the wind was right, or wrong depending on where you lived. |

When the train arrived, 1 car was strangely empty and the next car was packed. They went into the empty car, only to find a homeless person defecating inside, with the appropriate smells. They immediately went into the packed car, where they overheard a person jovially telling a tourist, "Bet you don't have this where you come from." |

Sometimes something would go wrong, and instead of some smoke and ash it would be clouds of smoke even getting into the apartments, for which somebody would call the fire department. Eventually, the incinerator was replaced with a trash compactor, but if you can read the raised writing covered with many years of paint, it's still referred to as an incinerator. |

When I left my house for work and drove over the Cross Bay bridge I looked across the bay and Brooklyn and Queens out to the city like usual and it was absolutely crystal clear I could see the sun reflecting off the windows of buildings in Manhattan let alone the towers. We would have maybe 4 or 5 days a year that would be that clear and that day was the most brilliant of them all ever. Zero haze. It was surreal in retrospect.Matter of fact the bay was so still that the towers were reflecting off the bay. Believe it or not. |

There is still a lurking dirty cloud over the city, but not as bad as it's been. The Canadian Wild Fires last year kinda reminded me of how bad the smog use to be in NYC when I was a kid. |
