Those pencil buildings have totally ruined the midtown skyline, probably the only good thing about losing the railfan window on the Flushing Line.

But the WTC was built particularly flimsily. The Empire State Building withstood an airplane much better, structurally. I don't think we know how this building would do, and obviously we don't want to find out.

I would actually venture to guess that sliver buildings are built much more like the Empire State Building. Otherwise they might sway sickeningly in a strong wind, while the WTC wouldn't have because of its large cross-sectional area.

(Factoid: 1 Penn Plaza sways noticeably in a strong wind.)

It was the fire that caused the WTC collapse not the impact.

The jet fuel on the 767's caused much more fire damage to the WTC buildings than the B25's gasoline did to the Empire State Building.

That’s not correct or fair to say that the WTC was flimsily built.
And your example is a little WWII bomber crashing into the Empire State as supposed to loaded 767s flying 4 or 5 hundred miles per hour?

Why? It was, relative to just about every skyscraper previously built. I didn't mean it as an accusation of negligence - it would have held up to any reasonably expected external forces.

It was an open floor concept. No other way to build it other than the way it was built. It was brilliant.

Yes, it was brilliant. No reasonably anticipated (in 1960, when it was being designed) event would have caused trouble. Again, I didn't mean flimsy in a pejorative sense. Purely factual.

Well they did anticipate a 707 strike and determined they could withstand the blow. The rescuing fires would have been too much to consider. Empire State has many layers of redundancy where the twin towers put their redundancy into essentially just two places, core and outer wall.

A communication tower, with observation decks located in several different areas.
It does Not have any significant amounts of floor space to be called a "building".

People tend to forget that the planes that hit the WTC were heavy with JET FUEL.

It wasn't the impact that caused the towers to fail.
It was the fuel, causing the fire, that burned consistently at a high temperature.
Weakening the support TRUSS crossbeams, and buckling the floors.

The fire suppression systems were nonexistent ,since the crash damaged every thing.

There was no stopping point, since the fire was being reinforced by the fuel.

The difference here is the design of the time.
The ESB has its strengths lacked throughout the building structure, steel belts andcrossbars.

The WTC used an open concept design, where it's strengths were contained within its core, the steel frame outside, and steel truss connectors between the frame and core.

The WTC had it skeleton on the "outside", whereas the ESB has its skeleton on the "inside".

Different support structures, doing the same job.

Flimsy in a factual sense? You got to be kidding!.
What "facts" to you have to back up your ridiculous claim that the WTC construction was "flimsy"? I'm not a good at math or physics but here are the facts: take the weight of those airplanes X the force( @4-500mph) of that weight slamming into the buildings, then staying up with the weight of those planes within the structure all while the buildings withstood all that without toppling over from the initial hit in the first place, and you say that construction was "flimsy"?
Amazing!
