Re: Biden on High Gas Prices: it's part of the: transition we are in

What breakdowns? An EV has no engine, or transmissions, and batteries and motors are significantly less mechanically complex. If you’re worried about your car breaking down, then it would be completely counterproductive to get an ICE car, which is far more likely to break down.

Except that there are numerous locations where you can get parts for a standard auto today or find a mechanic to work on one. Parts or certified mechanics for EVs are not yet as common.

How often do subway trains break down? After all, they're powered by electric motors. Dead motors on subway cars happen all the time. Get enough of them you have a dead train.

OK, but realistically, you aren't going to fill up completely. You'll fill from 50 miles left to 250 miles left. Same with a gasoline car.

The average gas fill up is nowhere near a complete fill-up. And that's obviously not including all the overhead of a fill-up.

"It’s a non-issue."

How is in a "non issue"? After all an EV is still a machine and machines do break down. Your link is interesting, but it refers mainly to "appointments" and there are many strings attached.
And breaking down on the side if the road, mobile services can happen "where available"
Thats not exactly confidence inspiring. I'd still go with triple A & hope that the nearest EV service outpost is not beyond triple A's free towing limit.

Unlike an electric fill-up, a gas fillup doesn’t slow down the fuller the tank.

On the other hand, there are fixed actions associated with stopping for gas which you have to do ever time. Filling up less often therefore saves time.

I owned a car for 47 years. I brought it to a mechanic many dozens of times.

OK, so maybe owning an EV when you can't charge it at home will cost you 6 or 8 extra hours a year.

And that's only as long as your trips aren't long ones.

On a long trip, people need to do a bathroom break every 2 to 3 hours anyway. Now the extra time to charge up an EV at a high speed station will be barely noticed.

I locked in for my moms house's oil in November fir 4.85, which I thought was outrageous. It's worse now. Her last fill up (I pay her bills, that's why I am using her as an example as I have natural gas), was like $885.00 for like 195 gallons (something to that effect)....utterly absurd. It's more than double her bills last year, and they only filled up in March or so prior.

My natural gas went up too, but not as bad as heating oil did

When I owned a car very few of my fill-ups were close to a full tank. I didn't generally want to risk going below one quarter, and often when it was half full I figured I have the time now, maybe later I'll be more rushed.

Cars today aren't like "47 years ago". They don't break down nearly as often. My car has 180,000 Mike's on it, and it hasn't been in the shop for anything in over two years when I put brakes on it. I believe electric cars also need brakes. Yes I did go to jiffy lube after 7500-10000 miles (synthetic oil) for 10 minutes.

Yep. All we need now is to install charging stations along the RTs 80,79 & 78 rest stops and that would be an incentive for me since I often drive back & forth between Pittsburgh , Lancaster PA & Long Island. Thanks. Even though it is something that can fail, I’ve never heard of an EV inverter failing. The most common unique problems that can’t be solved by an ICE shop involve the batteries.

Sometimes it’s the 12 V battery, which an ICE shop is absolutely equipped to fix.

So then the 7 minutes is really out of line. Your claim after that was shown wildly off by about 5 minutes. Then you claim most aren't even full tank full ups. Okay (I'd need to verify that, but doubt that is the case), but less filling would mean even more less time. By the way, it took me less than two minutes today to fill my tank from empty to $78.00 worth of gas to fill it.

Why? Cars bought this century can estimate how many miles you have to go before empty and it's not like gas stations are scarce. I typically refuel when I get below a quarter tank but no later than 25-50 miles left in the tank.

That's probably not a good idea in California because we can get an earthquake, that could knock out power (and gas stations) but I figure where am I going to go should that happen?
