Eighty Years Ago Today

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Tue Dec 7 06:48:22 2021

Eighty years ago today, the gallant sailors, soldiers, and Marines of the United States Pacific Fleet, anchored at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, were peacefully going about their Sunday morning routines. Out of a warm, sunny sky, hundreds of fighter, dive-bomber, and torpedo planes from a Japanese strike force descended upon the ships, intent on their mission of decisively knocking the US Navy out of the Pacific Ocean. Their missiles struck home, entombing thousands of brave young men within the hulls of their vessels, smashing scores of aircraft on the ground, and splintering the piers from which the Fleet would have sailed to fight.

The United States was thus plunged into the most catastrophic military conflict in human history. Thuis had the effect of shattering the complacency of people on the home front who, just the day before, were mostly content to stay out of the war, despite the existential threat the Axis clearly posed. All that changed utterly in a couple of hours on that soft, deadly, holiday-season morning. Please pause a moment to remember those valiant seamen, who served and died on the first day of our engagement in a war that would see unspeakable numbers of their comrades follow them into Valhalla. Requiescat In Pacem.

I don't think so. Monuments like the Gettysburg Battlefield or the Tomb of The Unknown Solider are still treated with the reverence for history they deserve, to this day.

Besides, the Prison Ship Monument is a huge obelisk in Fort Greene, that can be seen for miles around. It's unlikely to fade into obscurity anytime soon.

I disagree. It (pre pandemic) drew pretty good crowds of mostlty tourists. It pains me that that sacred ground has morphed into a tourist destination with their selfies and whatnot as opposed to a monument to all who died there.

I don’t have a problem with all of the tourists there, as it is the site of a major historical event and a public memorial. But the happy selfies are unseemly.

A still from a Simpson's episode first broadcast AFAIK in the mid 90s
With a subtle 9/11 reference, an eerie premonition it would seem.

I believe that "Simpson's Visit NYC" episode has been pulled from syndication

It hasn’t been. It didn’t air in NYC for like ten years, but it has since aired here and aired regularly in syndication and on cable channels FXX and Freeform.

It’s also on Disney+ with most of the rest of the series. There is, however, exactly one banned episode of the Simpsons.

What I found interesting is that events that hold great importance to Americans are for the most part - with the exception of 9/11 - unknown in other countries. Back in 2014 when I was in Australia I was tossing back a pint or two with some people who sponsored a presentation I gave in Sydney. We were all in our mid-50's to mid-60's. I forget how it came up in conversation but I mentioned JFK's assassination. Blank stares from all of them; they had no idea who JFK was. When I explained he was an American president the blank stares continued. They had no idea what I was talking about and didn't know who he was. I was a bit taken aback but to be fair, I know nothing about Australia political history of the last 50 years.

How many people know the significance of June 6th? I know I watch my copy of The Longest Day every June 6th as I feel it was one of the most important days in all of history. But most people don't know or even care. Most young people don't even know who we fought in WW2.

What about 19 Nov 1942?

That was the start of Operation Uranus, the Soviet counter offensive at Stalingrad. This resulted in the encirclement of the German 6th Army and its eventual destruction/surrender on 2 Feb 1943.

You're right. D-Day is a big one and even if people know it's important, many don't fully know what happened that day. Same with Pacific battles like Midway or Corregidor, which aren't D-Day level but still important milestones. I know people who don't know which war the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi took place in ("Korea")
