What I found interesting is that events that hold great importance to Americans are for the most part - with the exception of 9/11 - unknown in other countries. Back in 2014 when I was in Australia I was tossing back a pint or two with some people who sponsored a presentation I gave in Sydney. We were all in our mid-50's to mid-60's. I forget how it came up in conversation but I mentioned JFK's assassination. Blank stares from all of them; they had no idea who JFK was. When I explained he was an American president the blank stares continued. They had no idea what I was talking about and didn't know who he was. I was a bit taken aback but to be fair, I know nothing about Australia political history of the last 50 years. |
