Someone once described the work of a harbor pilot to me as "being able to get a fully laden cargo ship filled with all kinds of dangerous chemicals through a body of water that hasn't been properly dredged in 20 years, in the middle of the night, amidst the worst fog anyone living in the area can remember, and going out the next day to do it all over again."

Trust me, they're worth every nickel they earn.

I don't know. I'm sure that it depends on the harbor and the conditions. I've heard ship Captains in LA don't consider the harbor pilot to be necessary. I don't think that they actually "pilot", just provide direction to the ship by radio while onboard.

I'd guess that being a river boat captain is considerably harder as conditions change more radically and frequently and they don't make nearly as much. Its a fallacy that workers get paid by how hard they work or even how much they know.

Wow, second-hand info from the WSJ's Christopher Mims. Don't know if there would be fewer deaths if the pilots were shuttled on board by helicopter; going from a pilot boat to a huge freighter should not be so inherently dangerous.

The harbor pilot first approaches the massive skyscraper-sized cargo ship from a 55-foot long speedboat, according to Mims, who described how LA port harbor pilot Captain John Betz maneuvered the Netherlands, a Chinese-owned ship from Cosco Shipping Lines. …
Sick of Cosco ships. Send 'em all back.
