Up-Up and Away!! |
|
Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Sun Mar 7 09:23:10 2021 ...go the gas prices at the pump. Overnight price per gallon in SW Pennsylvania went to $3.09 a gallon with predictions of topping $4 by Memorial Day. That with the Pa Tnpk being the most expensive toll road in the country, its time to hop on the "Pennsylvanian" for my next NYC trip. Got to check out what the fares are nowadays. Haven't done that in awhile. Hopefully, Amtrak can save me a few $$$. |

In my opinion, the causes of this increase in gas prices were set in motion long before Biden was sworn in. In any case, Biden hasn't been in office long enough (or done anything drastic enough) to trigger such a rapid spike in natural-resource prices. |

Increases are due to: 1) refineries shut down in TX due to the freeze; 2) expectations of a rapidly improved economy as more are vaccinated and more states open up (remove mask mandates) to 100% dining in restaurants, gyms, etc.; 3) Biden's aim is to raise gasoline prices to where solar and wind are price-competitive.This article is very informative re: at what price point does renewable energy make more sense to build and use than non-renewable. https://think.ing.com/articles/wind-and-solar-get-increasingly-cheaper |

The official line is lower production due to all the power shortages around the Texas refineries and increase demand due to the ease of Covid restrictions. You can take all that for what its worth. |

Add to that the disruptions because texas’s didn’t properly regulate their electric grid, and it crashed. Bear in mind the weather system that did it in is rare, it has a history. This wasn't a complete fluke. Cold like this has happened to them before. |

Which has nothing to do with their ability to crack crude oil, or deliver same to end users. Crude continues to arrive via rail to refineries as it has for the longest time. What we've lost are the smaller regional refineries which used to serve geographic areas, so losing one region's facilities only meant a smaller disruption as those around make up the difference. Now everyone suffers if something happens to texass. |

I'm sure Chris can explain how, in addition to the Keystone Pipeline helping Canada export Alberta oil more cheaply from ports in the Gulf of Mexico, rather than having to ship it to the Great Lakes or Prince Rupert, the cancelation also has raised US gasoline prices. |

Actually, if there were supply chain disruptions, we'd see shortages, perhaps just isolated shortages, at the pump. What you are seeing is the market pull back due to anticipated shortages because of biden imposed drilling restrictions. Future shortages that make current supply more valuable. But to your point, only another low grade moron would agree with your guess. |

Biden has taken federal land off the market for future drilling of oil and gas.Given that huge amounts of oil and gas in private hands aren't being drilled because of a glut (see unemployment rates in North Dakota), this will have an effect on fossil fuel supply in about 2040. |
