It's Dr. Seuss's own company that decided not to continue publishing certain books. Not Joe Biden or any other politician.

I don't really know the books in question, so I don't know what in them might be seen as racist. I do know that, before he became a children's book author, Dr. Seuss created some highly racist propaganda cartoons, back in WW II. But that was accepted then, anything to beat "the Japs". Possibly some of the creatures in his early children's books looked too much like those caricatures of the Japanese. That would be my best guess as to what this is all about. But it is frustrating that no one will really say, because even making it clear what it is that is objected to would be considered offensive.

With 5 minutes of Googling I get the idea that he's got a fair number of stereotypical drawings of Chinese people, whom he refers to as "Chinamen." That's the worst I could find.

I'm surprised they didn't just touch up the pictures slightly and make a new edition. New York City Ballet's Nutcracker has a dance sequence with a Chinese guy dancing. In recent years they got rid of the most farcical stereotyping, and that was the end of that.

S-P refers to anti-Semitic drawings, but I didn't find any references to those. Maybe Jews with big noses? Also pretty easily fixable.

But I'm not talking about people being murdered for who they are. I'm talking about the role of stereotypes and caricatures in that process.

And the role has been bigger for some groups than others, and has been particularly small when it comes to Germans. When Russians murdered Germans in 1945, they weren't incited by pictures of them eating bratwurst.

I disagree. As an Irish-American growing up in Irish Woodside, there were Irish "stereotypes" all over the place. I never knew anyone to be "harmed" by one. St. Patrick's day is coming up & the annual showing of "The Quiet Man" will be on the tube someplace. That movie sends up every Irish Stereotype out there. Yet nobody complains about it. We just laugh it off. The Irish are thick skinned enough to laugh at ourselves all well knowing that the Irish contribution to the building of America is insurmountable. .
AFAIK, theres no movement to "Gone With The Wind" that movie as in banning it or pre airing disclaimers about it.

You're 100 years too young. Plenty of Irish died in the US from horrendous working conditions that were considered acceptable because they were only Irish and not people deserving of any respect.

There is a lot of evidence that slavery in the South in the 1850s was economically much less profitable than it used to be because using Irish workers was cheaper than using slaves.

I basically agree with your post, but what you cite wasn't an example of a stereotype, it was outright hatred of the Irish Catholics. When the Irish fled Ireland for religious freedom & escape from discrimination in addition to avoid starvation at the hands of the Brits, they ran into similar conditions here in America, at the time run by White Anglo-Saxon Protestants.
Point being, a stereotype is one thing, more of less just words. Racial persecution & religious discrimination is something else, which is what most of the "off the boat" Irish had to deal with.
