He clearly meant the phrase as satire. But regardless, the shift of the Charlie Brown specials to Apple TV is because Apple outbid the traditional networks for them. Not because people at those networks didn't want to show them anymore.

Dosen't make sense to me. Why would the networks let a proven moneymaker go? For the last few years they were showing it twice a season completely sold out as far as commercials go. Translation: it made money. And why would a obscure streaming service shell out big bucks for a show thats only shown once or twice a year for a much smaller audience? Do they expect a surge of subscribers just to see Charlie Brown?

They are going to sell the identity of everyone who watches to advertisers. That's how they will recoup their investment.

That’s a nice dystopian theory, but the more plausible explanation is that signing up classics like this gives them more publicity, so more people will know they exist and what kind of content they have.

Because they were outbid. What part of Apple has more money is hard to understand?

And if what was such a moneymaker for Disney (ABC owner), then why don’t you think it would be valuable enough an asset for a significantly richer company to want to snap it up? Don’t you think that things that (supposedly) make a lot of money should sell for a lot of money?

"...viewers don’t equal ad revenue anymore."

Good grief, talk about being out of touch! Why do you think shows get cancelled?

Check out what happened to the NBA & NFL. Network ratings down (as they were this season big time) = less they can charge for Ad spots. Broadcasting 101.Overall ratings down across all demos, especially the coveted 25-54 group which has the most spendable $$$.
Expect big changes to the presentations next year in an attempt to get the ratings (ad revenue) back.
And with many folks staying home the last 6 months, TV ratings should have thru the roof. Didn't happen.

They get cancelled because they have bad demos. That’s what I meant by “some viewers are more valuable than others.”

And your response to that is to show decline in viewership by a key demo.

They wouldn't have been produced for the "bad demo" in the first place. Its shows that are aimed for the $$$ (key demo 25-54) for prime time broadcast that get lousy ratings and wind up getting cancelled. Lousy ratings = bad ad revenue and out comes the axe. NO network produces programming aimed at older demos for showing on prime time. Theres not enough ad money there and Its all about the $$$.
Most if not all of the "Bad Demo" shows are on MeTv.

Right, but I'm saying that a show could have high ratings, but those ratings are useless because they're all too old, or too young. So that's what I meant, which you are agreeing with. In the old days they didn't do it that way. They wouldn't have cancelled Star Trek if it had been a few years later.

Correct. Reaching back to my mental archives, shows like "The Lawrence Welk show" Ed Sullivan, & Red Skelton had ratings thru the roof. But were cancelled when the the concept of "demos" was introduced. They appealed to folks that didn't have spendable $$$. Madison Ave concept.
As for Star Trek, different situations prevailed here. It always had marginal ratings from day one. In its 3'd season, NBC slashed production costs & dumped it to 10PM on Friday Night when no one in its target demo would be home watching TV, thus insuring its cancellation. NBC was putting all its chips on its new "Laugh-In" to get all those younger viewers. Its success in syndication was truly cult-ish to the point of spawning all those Star Trek movies & several TV spin offs

Star Trek was almost canceled in the second season; the third season was thanks to the write-in campaign. Shows that the networks cared nothing for viewers' likes back then.
