Correct. Reaching back to my mental archives, shows like "The Lawrence Welk show" Ed Sullivan, & Red Skelton had ratings thru the roof. But were cancelled when the the concept of "demos" was introduced. They appealed to folks that didn't have spendable $$$. Madison Ave concept.
As for Star Trek, different situations prevailed here. It always had marginal ratings from day one. In its 3'd season, NBC slashed production costs & dumped it to 10PM on Friday Night when no one in its target demo would be home watching TV, thus insuring its cancellation. NBC was putting all its chips on its new "Laugh-In" to get all those younger viewers. Its success in syndication was truly cult-ish to the point of spawning all those Star Trek movies & several TV spin offs
