Charlie Brown gets the Boot off Network TV |
|
Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Wed Oct 21 20:49:38 2020 For the first time in 54 years, the highly popular "A Charlie Brown Christmas" will not be shown on network TV this season. It was bumped down to some obscure outlet known as Apple TV. For decades it was part of the holiday season programming rotation (Rudolph, Grinch, Frosty etc.) but no more. For the last few years it was shown more than once during the season, indicating that the popularity was there, and the sponsors made $$$. But no more.Pure speculation on my part, it wouldn't suprise me that some elements of the ultra left put the squeeze on network suits a/c the use of the word "Christmas" and Linus' reading of the biblical passage about the real meaning of Christmas contained within that got the show tossed. If true about the pressure, we've sunk to a new low. Its a damn shame. |

Holy shit, that’s terrible. When I was a kid in the ‘70s, I looked forward to all of the Charlie Brown specials on CBS, especially “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. My yeshiva friends used to watch it too. We never felt remotely threatened or insulted by the Christmas message even though we were Jewish. I also used to love “Davey & Goliath” when I was a kid. I’m glad I grew up in a time when people just weren’t so wacky about political correctness. Today’s kids are missing out on so much. |

Not to argue against your point, but where does "The Bible," meaning the NT, explain "the true meaning of Christmas." It talks about the birth of Y'shua ben Yosef. but the date of that celebratory event was almost certainly in the Spring. The late December date was probably meant to preempt ancient Winter Solstice celebration, as Easter preempts Pasach. |

I'm not assigning political pressure to this, but the self-censorship in media to avoid traditional displays may well be to blame.A curious example I recently noticed was a children's cartoon show in which the characters all described the reasons we are thankful as a celebratory feast day. They all called it "Giving Thanks Day," over and over. Of course, it may just have been that they knew using the traditional name may have triggered turkeys. |

They didn't let go of the very popular Grinch, Frosty, or Rudolph. Only Charley Brown. Connecting the dots in my mind was the "Christmas" and Biblical passage reading by Linus that led to the move. |

Apple has significantly deeper pockets than any of the networks. They are a bigger company than ViacomCBS, Comcast, Fox Corporation, The Walt Disney Company, or AT&T.In any case, since Apple TV+ is supposedly obscure, bringing known programming on board boosts brand recognition. Many companies do things at a loss for marketing purposes. This is completely in conflict with any theory that A Charlie Brown Christmas is controversial. But pretty much everything is in conflict with the Conservative Persecution Complex. |

If anything, putting it on a streaming service is giving it more exposure, not less. I might watch A Charlie Brown Christmas again if it showed up as a suggestion to me, but there’s no way I would just tune into CBS or whatever network when they happen to air it. Maybe for a weekly show, but not a one-off special. |

Netflix is garbage.HBO always sucked. Amazon kicks your shows off before you get to finish a season. You're listening to pedo's too much. Only junkies have time to waste their lives in front of the boob toob. Plenty of people don't watch any of it. Quality varies widely by where you live and the way you receive your signal. I cable and high speed internet on fiber, both are better than any antenna I could use. I know they use the "sign up & forget to cancel after a month" bit normally, I don't know if that is in effect for this special or not. I don't use the service myself. You're getting a little bit deep into the weeds on this. I was just focusing on (and not in any historical sense)the biblical passage woven into the story line of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and the speculation that the godless left that reeks of intolerance under the guise of "PC" might have been a factor in Charlie Brown moving on off of mainstream network TV.Thats all. |
