Johnny Carson was very vanilla. He wasn't bad but he wasn't good really either. His guests made his show and he was decent at highlighting them.

Graham Norton

The best talk show on right now. Guests come on and often talk unscripted and tell real stories that are hilarious. Graham is ok, but the format where the guests interact and don't just come to talk about their latest project is the best.

Not for me I guess. The comedic stylings of Johnny Carson were lost on me. I listened to his monologue and then that was it depending on whether or not he had a guest that I liked.

That's the problem. Nobody wants to watch a comic who is both politically neutral and jokes about current events. People are way more political now. Not to mention that because TV is more segmented than it was for most of the period 1962-92, there's no longer any benefit to being "mainstream." You're not going to get the majority of the viewers, so why try?

Anyway, Fallon does try to be more politically neutral and apolitical than Colbert and Kimmel, so in that way he's Carson's successor.

Times are certainly different. I would go so far as to say that Carson never made political jokes. He made jokes about politicians, but they weren't political. There's a difference between making fun of Ford being accident prone and making jokes regarding political policy.

I don't mind jokes about politicians. I enjoy the SNL skits where they lampoon Trump and others (although it's kind of run it's course for me), but I don't care for Kimmel's political satire.

I'd go so far as to say that many on the right and left have a litmus test where they will refuse to watch entertainers that don't share their political views. It's bizarre that people are so obsessed with politics, but news coverage impacts that. Look what happened to Taylor Swift. News outlets were practically calling her a Nazi and people were going to boycott her until she came out and clarified that she's as liberal as can be. I don't know if true, but it helped her career and ended the negative coverage.

I can understand only enjoying political humor that you agree with, but Taylor Swift's music is entirely apolitical (AFAIK). Caring about her politics is just bullshit.

I can say the same about people who stopped listening to Kanye when he supported Trump.

Colbert is the left wing Hannity. People on the right watch news commentary, while people on the left watch political comedy. I wonder why.
