Times are certainly different. I would go so far as to say that Carson never made political jokes. He made jokes about politicians, but they weren't political. There's a difference between making fun of Ford being accident prone and making jokes regarding political policy.

I don't mind jokes about politicians. I enjoy the SNL skits where they lampoon Trump and others (although it's kind of run it's course for me), but I don't care for Kimmel's political satire.

I'd go so far as to say that many on the right and left have a litmus test where they will refuse to watch entertainers that don't share their political views. It's bizarre that people are so obsessed with politics, but news coverage impacts that. Look what happened to Taylor Swift. News outlets were practically calling her a Nazi and people were going to boycott her until she came out and clarified that she's as liberal as can be. I don't know if true, but it helped her career and ended the negative coverage.
