Why? Do you have the virus? What I'd like to hear about are the numbers of those who had the virus & got over it. Haven't heard to much of that. Not to downplay the severity of this, but folks should be reminded that this is not an automatic death sentence. Hearing the numbers of survivors would reinforce the fact that you can get over this. Those cured numbers would help with a bit of optomistic "spin"

Given the level of precautions now in effect for 80% of the American people, I am fully aware that this virus can, and does have the capability of killing a great many of us. Neither you, nor I, can predict who this virus will strike next, or whether it will be survivable. I know several people who have contracted it, one of whom is currently critical in Columbia Presbyterian. I'm sure all of them didn't expect to catch this virus, too.

I'm not so arrogant as to think it can't happen to me.

The overwhelming majority of deaths are in the 65+ age groups and more than a third are 75+. I'd say the odds are in your favor of surviving, if you catch it.

Of course not. But suppose it kills 2% of those who get it. Without isolation, everyone will get it before a vaccine is available, because it's really easy to catch.

So that's 6 million dead Americans. Probably more because eventually the medical system will collapse and a lot of people who could have been saved with good medical care won't be saved because good medical care will no longer be available.

That's the real issue. When considering the severity of the virus, also note that some young and otherwise healthy survivors have to go through hell battling it, e.g. David Lat, who is doing better now after having been in critical condition, on a ventilator and sedated for a week.

We're following behind other countries. To be tested is going to be "strongly recommended" if not a law soon.

But on the other hand, the deaths lag the incidence of infection - people are counted now as infected but alive who won't be alive in 2 weeks. So it's not clear in the long run whether the death toll will be higher or lower than it is right now (roughly 2%).

As I understand it, It's already at least 3% of the counted cases, before the lag.

NYC Health

Look at the gray "citywide total" bars in the graphs near the bottom of the page.

544.21 cases per 100,000 people. (That's 1 in 200 by the way).
16.36 deaths.

16.36/544.21=Over 3%

Am I reading that right?

Best hope IMO is that lots of people are getting it without symptoms, or at least without sensing a need to get tested, and collective immunity is growing (and also the death rate is down).
