Never thought I'd ever say this

Posted by Dave on Thu Feb 27 11:10:09 2020

But for the first time ever, I agree with AOC about something. Naming Pence to lead the coronavirus response is absurd. He's not a doctor; he's not a health care professional; and he's a science denier. What could possibly go wrong here?

All the professional epidemiology-related positions at the high levels in the federal government are vacant. If, perchance, he actually listens to the carefully considered opinions of the career personnel who remain, at least he will be heard when he proposes specific measures.

Of course, if he doesn't listen, we're screwed.

You really want to go down the same route Obama did with his "czars"??

You have no basis for that accusation. Just call yourself a liberal and be honest with yourself for once.

That's left-wing-speak for someone who does not believe in the false religion of "global warming", or more than two genders, or "rights" given solely by government ad nauseam.

And what function should Vice President serve besides just the president of the senate, or waiting for the president to become incapacitated?

Don't expect a coherent answer.

And don't expect him to mention that Obama's "Ebola czar" had zero medical expertise—the man is a lawyer.

I’m glad that we have people that question science. Without them we’d still be taught that meat turns into maggots and that wood in its elemental state is composed of fire.

We are at a point where non-scientists accept all science that supports their opinions and rejects science that doesn’t. It’s become very political on both sides.

Pence wrote a paper that denied smoking is carcinogenic. Now that might be his "opinion", and it might involve science that doesn't support his opinion, but it contradicts known scientific FACT.

I don't want someone in charge of the coronavirus response who chooses to ignore scientific facts because they may not comport with his opinions.

But science should be questioned from a scientific point of view. Once something is scientifically proven, it's time to move on. Otherwise you just have flat earthers.

Let me give a politically conservative example.

Leftists say that fracking causes pollution and earthquakes. But the science strongly posits that it's not fracking that causes pollution; it's careless practices that are equally a part of regular gas drilling. The solution is not to curb fracking but to curb careless drilling practices.

Similarly, science tends to show it's not fracking that causes the earthquakes, it's injecting the used fracking water back into the ground that does. So don't ban fracking; ban re-injection of the fracking water.

So I'm all for scientists questioning science. I'm not so much for people ignorant of the science questioning science. They question science without using established scientific methods to show the errors. "Meat turns into maggots" was disproved by good science, not by random people saying it's not so.

Pence, besides being one of the stupidest persons in the administration, fundamentalist fanatic, anti-science, fucked up the HIV crisis in Indiana, and doubts smoking causes cancer,

Trump's idiotic press conference yesterday, contradicting the CDC, and putting Pence in charge of communication messaging is why the stock market is down 1,200 points today, the largest point drop in history.

When the private sector doesn't make their "quarterly number" set by the childish attention spans of Wall Street analysts, they get rid of people. It does not matter what their workload is.

Goldman Sachs expects net zero corporate earnings for 2020. That means the private health sector will have to be subsidized to do anything required for public health.

I don’t think that most people are knowledgeable to even make such distinctions. As an example there are a minority but still plenty of scientists that disagree that climate change is caused by man-made greenhouse gases. But you can’t even point that out without being labeled a science denier.

Pence may be used to control messaging from the CDC, so as not to contradict Trump, who thinks it will not spread any further when the whether gets warm in April and it is just like Flu. THAT is the danger.

This is far more contagious than flu and there won't be a vaccine for a year.

Then there are the cuts to CDC and NIH. He said last night he can get their staff back when he needs to. if they get other jobs, no he can't. They are not like furloughed railroad crews.

That's a very tiny minority we're talking about. And I'm not sure that saying that there are scientists that disagree is bad - there are scientists that disagree on a lot of things. It's when people point to that 1%-3% and go "See? Climate change isn't settled, therefore it's BS", or twisting statements, or take them out of context, that they start being labeled as science deniers.

I'm afraid it is, according to NBC News medical contributor Dr. Natalie Azar:

"Though the coronavirus is "definitely" more contagious than the flu, it's important to remember that it usually isn't fatal, said Azar. "For flu, it's about 0.1% mortality. For coronavirus, it's about 2%. SARS was 10%," she explained."
