I don't fly into JFK often so I don't know if this is normal but from Buffalo we turned south flying over the center of Manhattan and out over the Bay where we turned east. We continued east reaching Amityville before turning north over Republic Airport to Long island sound. Turned west until we turned south around North Shore Towers, along the Cross Island Pkwy and onto 22R, I'm guessing. Now that's one big circle. |

Perhaps somewhat but I think that the primary reason is to be able to show routes without overlaying the lines on the map. Anyone looking at an airline destination map can see this. |

I forget the site but I remember seeing the set routes used in NYC when the airports have certain runways in use for arrivals and others for departures. Your arrival route into 22R had to avoid LGA traffic (its departures and its arrivals and its arrivals' missed approach path) amongst other things. Deer Park is a common fix relevant to the route.Just landed on 4R from a transatlantic. Came in over Providence, then the North Fork, diagonally crossed Long Island and ended up along the coast of New Jersey before finally turning around for the landing. It's dragging out the agony after such a long flight but that's the way it goes. It would be cool to get a better view of the skyline after coming in from the sea but there's not much chance as transatlantic flights don't land at LGA, yet. |
